And look at us in purple because it is spirit day on October 15th. It may be passed by the time you watch this, but0:45
45 seconds
that's a day and should be every day when you stand up to anti-LGBTQ bullying. And speaking of bullies, Elon0:53

And the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, uh, not Donald Trump, is a longtime champion of LGBTQ rights.2:05
2 minutes, 5 seconds
And he had something to say about that, didn't he? An LGBTQ activist was murdered in India. We'll tell you all about it.2:12
2 minutes, 12 seconds
Yes. Terrible, terrible story. And the founder of the Pink News and his husband who were slandered by the BBC over there2:21
2 minutes, 21 seconds
in uh England uh received an apology and a settlement. And we get a lot of news from the pink news. So, we thank them. Well, big bucks.2:29
2 minutes, 29 seconds
So, so here we are. And we start with with the midterm elections. And Elon Musk seems to think that pouring anotherChapter 2: Election politics

$336 million into the campaign with with mostly with anti-trans ads is somehow going to bail out the Republicans. What do you think?2:48
2 minutes, 48 seconds
It didn't work in the last election. It was proven that those kind of attack ads against trans people and his money was2:56
2 minutes, 56 seconds
just poorly spent. Now, you're talking about when when you say the last election, I mean, uh, it certainly didn't work in the Virginia, New Jersey3:03
3 minutes, 3 seconds
gubinatorial races. Correct. So, you you're talking about the last presidential race.3:08
3 minutes, 8 seconds
Well, in the presidential race, we all know what happened there. But in local races, in state races, those kind of ads have backfired and his money wasn't3:17
3 minutes, 17 seconds
achieving the result that he thought he was getting. It was a bad investment. And a lot of the money is also Hello.3:24
3 minutes, 24 seconds
What's going on with that, Beloo? Well, it's good to see Harvey Milk again. Are we back? Yes.3:28
3 minutes, 28 seconds
Yes. There's no problem seeing Harvey Milk again. We're [laughter] back. We're back. Yes.3:32
3 minutes, 32 seconds
Uh talk about the uh Well, no. I mean, a lot of the money he's spending is going into uh canvasing, going door to door, paying3:41
3 minutes, 41 seconds
people to go to doortodoor. They get $3 for each door that they knock on. That sounds like a pretty good deal. Uh you can knock on a lot of doors. But3:49
3 minutes, 49 seconds
progressives generally have volunteers, thousands of them, non-paid volunteers.3:54
3 minutes, 54 seconds
I think people power beats money every time.3:59
3 minutes, 59 seconds
And also shoe leather putting the effort in. Uh the other thing is that this is the world's richest man and he's making bad investments.4:07
4 minutes, 7 seconds
Yes, he is. [laughter] And of course he a lot of the reason he does this is cuz he hates his uh trans daughter who has disowned him and doesn't care about his4:15
4 minutes, 15 seconds
money, Vivian Wilson. And she changed her name just to be away from that man. Uh and uh4:23
4 minutes, 23 seconds
he of course he accuses James Terico of of of having a radical trans agenda. And Telerico is up six points on the latest polls.4:32
4 minutes, 32 seconds
And that's despite attempts by people like Carrie Lake. Carrie Lake said that the reason Telerico was off the campaign trail, he had a flu, but she said he was getting bottom surgery. What?4:43
4 minutes, 43 seconds
It's it's it's it's nuts. Uh some people will believe anything. The new documentary about Elon Musk is out and4:50
4 minutes, 50 seconds
his ex-wife is in it. This is a 4-hour documentary. I don't think I'm going to see it. If you watch the show, you're pretty up on what Elon Musk's crimes4:57
4 minutes, 57 seconds
are. But she describes uh her trans Oh, Vivian, his daughter Vivian Wilson describes her transphobic [snorts] father as a pathetic manchild.5:10
5 minutes, 10 seconds
So, well, I I I will say that uh apparently the story is he bought Twitter just to shut down trans rights and trans people5:19
5 minutes, 19 seconds
because he was so angry about his daughter transitioning and and and he that's what he comments on all the time. And self-hating5:26

homosexual tech billionaire Peter Teal is spending $3.6 million in Ohio alone to stop Democrat Sherid Brown from5:35
5 minutes, 35 seconds
unseeding Republican John Huad. polls there are close, but Brown is up a5:40

couple points. And uh Trump was waxing homosexually about Hughad. Did you see that at his at his rally?5:51
5 minutes, 51 seconds
He was saying that he doesn't like looking at men, but he'll make an exception for him. He said, "Did you see his ass?" Yes.5:58
5 minutes, 58 seconds
That's what he said on he sat in front of in front of the crowd. And All right. And what was JD Vance up to this week?Chapter 3: Political scandals
6:06
6 minutes, 6 seconds
So JD Vance did a couple of things. One of the things he did was he wanted to thank the president by saying that he6:13
6 minutes, 13 seconds
loves him too, but not in a gay way like James Telerico. Homophobic slur. Hello.6:19
6 minutes, 19 seconds
And on top of that, he had to define socialism. Should we hear a clip of that?6:22
6 minutes, 22 seconds
Yes. Let's I don't know what the term means anymore. I think in reality, what it actually means [clears throat] in the American context is that you want to6:30
6 minutes, 30 seconds
replace American workers with foreign workers and you want boys to play in girls sports.6:35
6 minutes, 35 seconds
It's it's it's really pathetic and insane. I mean, uh, and I wish more Democrats would just say socialism,6:44
6 minutes, 44 seconds
Medicare, [clears throat] Medicaid, unemployment,6:46
6 minutes, 46 seconds
[laughter]6:46
6 minutes, 46 seconds
uh, public school, education, unemployment insurance, uh, roads have to pay a toll on socialism.6:55
6 minutes, 55 seconds
Isn't that all socialism?6:56
6 minutes, 56 seconds
Yes. [laughter and gasps] All right. And um, how about Rubio?7:03
7 minutes, 3 seconds
No.7:05
7 minutes, 5 seconds
Wait a minute. Uh just getting see if we're done with with Oh, oh, by the way, now Trump is openly7:12
7 minutes, 12 seconds
defying court order orders uh cut down more than 500 trees on the DC golf course. And I only mentioned this because uh these are court orders that7:21
7 minutes, 21 seconds
he is defi he's now ignoring what the court demands that he do because there is no punishment. Remember the Supreme Court said that whatever he7:29
7 minutes, 29 seconds
does while he's in office, he doesn't have to get uh, you know, in trouble for.7:34
7 minutes, 34 seconds
All right. So, Trump fired another woman.7:36
7 minutes, 36 seconds
Yeah, another one. Well, Kimberly Gilfoil, I believe the very loud exh fiance of his son, Donald J. Trump Jr.7:47
7 minutes, 47 seconds
apparently was using a Trump backer to try and pay off her MX bill prior to her7:55
7 minutes, 55 seconds
confirmation as ambassador to Greece.7:57
7 minutes, 57 seconds
Honey, please. Honey, please. She said to him and he said her name is Honey, please.8:02
8 minutes, 2 seconds
And he said no. He said no. And then he leaked the information. So that he leaked the recording.8:07
8 minutes, 7 seconds
Yes. Exactly. So now she's about to get fired if it's not already happened. But the thing about this is, and what you've8:14
8 minutes, 14 seconds
heard about this firing, although she said she resigned, he only fires women.8:20
8 minutes, 20 seconds
Seriously. Uh Christy Gnome from Homeland Security, Pam Bondi, DOJ, Lorie Chavez Dramer, Labor, Labor Department,8:29
8 minutes, 29 seconds
Gabbard. But their crimes pale in comparison to what the men are doing in that administration. I mean, they're terrible people. They're all terrible8:37
8 minutes, 37 seconds
people, but seriously, they are terrible people. But the crimes, I mean, especially from Trump himself, uh, are8:45
8 minutes, 45 seconds
are much more worse. All right. Okay. Let's talk about this. A a new rule from the TrumpChapter 4: Trans rights and policy
8:52
8 minutes, 52 seconds
administration, we've been talking about this, is going to take effect on October 13th, barring federal Medicaid and children's health insurance program from9:01
9 minutes, 1 second
covering gender affirming care for minors. And while se several Democrat states have produced workarounds to keep the programs running, Virginia and Arizona have quietly cut the funding.9:12
9 minutes, 12 seconds
Yeah. Not my home state of Virginia. Talk about it.9:14
9 minutes, 14 seconds
Well, Governor Spanberger uh has been very outspoken about uh in Virginia. Yeah. About taking care of trans people.9:21
9 minutes, 21 seconds
She actually undid a rule that Governor Yncan had about uh trans athletes in schools. But this seems like she's caving.9:30
9 minutes, 30 seconds
It does. California. Uh they're going to the way they're working around it is that reimbursement will no longer come from the Department of Health Care9:38
9 minutes, 38 seconds
Services, but from the Department of Healthcare Access. In Maine, the Department of Health and Human Services uh said that the rule from the9:45
9 minutes, 45 seconds
government feds does not prohibit us from do doing this kind of care. So, they're going to find another way to do it. But Virginia and Arizona have caved9:54
9 minutes, 54 seconds
in and they have, you know, Democrat governors and a Democrat uh running for uh possibly the president, maybe Arizona Senator Mark Kelly.10:04
10 minutes, 4 seconds
Oh, yeah. Right. Well, he's he's been he's been flo floated as a possible 2020. He's been floated. He's clearly running.10:09
10 minutes, 9 seconds
It's why goes on TV all the time. Um and then a year, this is weird. You can maybe talk about this. A year after10:17
10 minutes, 17 seconds
Virginia Commonwealth University Hospitals cut trans youth care, their own scholars published a study on the harms of transphobia from anti-trans policymaking.10:27
10 minutes, 27 seconds
What they found is that these new policies, these new laws that are sweeping across the country are actually10:34
10 minutes, 34 seconds
having a chilling effect on not only trans people existing but on closeted people coming out. And there's been a10:43
10 minutes, 43 seconds
story, I think you saw in the Washington Post in which it says that fewer people are identifying as LGBTQ these days.10:49
10 minutes, 49 seconds
Well, we'll get to that uh about uh who's identifying. I think they were talking about ninth grade girls has have10:57
10 minutes, 57 seconds
gone down a bit. And that's a study from the CDC, but we will talk about that.11:01
11 minutes, 1 second
But I I just want to ask how all how all this makes you feel. You were the first11:08
11 minutes, 8 seconds
out trans network TV news journalist in the country. That's right. How h how does it make you feel? Uh this11:16
11 minutes, 16 seconds
onslaught, this constant barrage of anti-trans stuff. How does it make you feel?11:21
11 minutes, 21 seconds
I would be lying if I didn't tell you I'm in fear.11:26
11 minutes, 26 seconds
I have to fight and I want to fight. But at the same time, I'm a producer, so I always have a plan B. I've applied for Irish citizenship because of my11:34
11 minutes, 34 seconds
grandparents being born in Ireland. And if I have to flee this country to survive, I will do that. I don't want11:40
11 minutes, 40 seconds
to. I fear for my children. My kids are gay, non-binary, and trans. I fear for11:47
11 minutes, 47 seconds
my friends and I fear for all of the trans kids who are living in this country right now knowing that there is11:54
11 minutes, 54 seconds
a policy that we can't exist as ourselves as our authenticelves. Even exist.12:02
12 minutes, 2 seconds
Right. Right. Uh one job I was offered last year in 2025, they told me they would put in my contract that if the governor decides I'm not a woman, I could get out of the contract.12:13
12 minutes, 13 seconds
I didn't sign the contract. I didn't take the job.12:16
12 minutes, 16 seconds
It's nuts. Uh and it's it's nuts that and that's, you know, in the spirit of spirit day, people need to stand up to12:24
12 minutes, 24 seconds
this stuff. When especi people, LGBT, any any LGBTQ people, any12:31
12 minutes, 31 seconds
people being derided for who they are, you need to stand up. You need to say something. You need to do something.12:38
12 minutes, 38 seconds
Stand up to bullying. I would say, Andy, that as much as it's important for trans people to stand up for ourselves, when an ally, a cisgender ally like yourself,12:47
12 minutes, 47 seconds
whether you be gay or by or non-binary or anything else, when someone who is not trans, stands up for us, it means that much more.12:55
12 minutes, 55 seconds
Okay? And we hope everybody will. Um, this study uh found uh, of course, the participants in the study were over 18.Chapter 5: Political debates
13:05
13 minutes, 5 seconds
Yes. So they're not even the young children who are particularly subjected to this. Um but uh it it has it but the13:12
13 minutes, 12 seconds
laws have a disproportionate effect on trans minors.13:16
13 minutes, 16 seconds
There are so few trans people in America and fewer trans athletes and few of these are trans kids.13:24
13 minutes, 24 seconds
Right.13:25
13 minutes, 25 seconds
I think the latest number from the Williams Institute of UCLA is something close to 2 million, maybe a little under two million. But out of a population of how many million in America right now?13:34
13 minutes, 34 seconds
Well, I mean it's like you know it's like the rise in anti-semitism in the United States. I mean how many I mean Jews constitute maybe 2% of the13:43
13 minutes, 43 seconds
population of the country. Not one of them.13:44
13 minutes, 44 seconds
Okay. Two [laughter] 2% of the c 2% of the population of the country. And yet people you know of you know stigmatize13:53
13 minutes, 53 seconds
go after them as if there's some sort of threat or whatever. It's it's awful.13:57
13 minutes, 57 seconds
Well, the Gaza situation and the Palestine and everything else has also made anti-semitism uh in vogue. Uh and uh I stand with the14:06
14 minutes, 6 seconds
Palestinian people. I stand with anyone who's oppressed. I just think that um what we're seeing in America is transphobia and anti-semitism and14:15
14 minutes, 15 seconds
islamophobia on the rise. And I think it's because it comes from Washington14:21
14 minutes, 21 seconds
and and people when it's expressed by people in power. Yeah. uh people then feel have power or not not just that14:30
14 minutes, 30 seconds
they express it but that they use it as an ad to to try to get your vote your transphobia then it becomes acceptable14:38
14 minutes, 38 seconds
for a lot of people to to talk this way but as Elon Musk has learned it's not an effective campaign well and let's talk about Montana and14:47
14 minutes, 47 seconds
Sam Forstack yeah really he's running for Congress he's Democrat so he was in Montana so he was in a debate in which he was14:54
14 minutes, 54 seconds
accused of supporting cutting off children's genitals. And he said, "You know what, folks? None of this is true. What this guy is trying to15:03
15 minutes, 3 seconds
do, my opponent, is try to distract you from your higher gas prices, from your uh your uh grocery prices, from the15:12
15 minutes, 12 seconds
corruption that's happening in Washington." That's what he said.15:14
15 minutes, 14 seconds
And he said uh the government has no business in these decisions and that voters should keep politics the heck out15:21
15 minutes, 21 seconds
of it. because he was asked oh the Aaron uh excuse me uh well actually the question was asked of15:28
15 minutes, 28 seconds
his opponent right but the US Supreme Court has said that discrimination against transgender people is discrimination based on sex in the workplace which is true15:36
15 minutes, 36 seconds
that's right Gorsuch actually signed that decision but it has not definitively established transgender status as a protected class15:43
15 minutes, 43 seconds
under the 14th amendment do you consider gender identity a protective classification and why and of course15:50
15 minutes, 50 seconds
Aaron Flint the republic Repan says says uh wouldn't he wouldn't he responded with an answer about not touching children and chopping off body parts.16:00
16 minutes
So for stack came back and and said what we said which is that you know the government should stay out of it as in16:08
16 minutes, 8 seconds
terms of sports that's being handled by the sports associations right you know etc. And the interesting thing that needs to be said is there are no16:17
16 minutes, 17 seconds
trans children being mutilated or getting gender affirming care. There are no sex changes if you want to call it that for minors. Are there exceptions?16:26
16 minutes, 26 seconds
Yeah, Jazz Jennings had an operation, bottom surgery we call it, or gender affirming care before she was 18. She's16:34
16 minutes, 34 seconds
an exception. That's an exception. Very rare for children to have any kind of even hormones. Most of the children who16:41
16 minutes, 41 seconds
are uh identified as trans after they are persistent, consistent and insistent, they are given puberty blockers and they transition socially.Chapter 6: Campaign rhetoric
16:51
16 minutes, 51 seconds
And then shared Brown, who is in a neckand-neck race with John Houston and in the Republican in Ohio, uh he16:59
16 minutes, 59 seconds
released an ad and this was, you know, he's he's fighting back. They are attacking him. Uh the ad says that Brown17:07
17 minutes, 7 seconds
supports sex changes for minors and irreversible surgery. Uh and and he they use a woman who said uh17:15
17 minutes, 15 seconds
to the transitioner who is Yes. to say and she didn't even live in Ohio. She wasn't a kid and she had the surgery at 19.17:23
17 minutes, 23 seconds
Right. [laughter] So mctomy. Yeah.17:26
17 minutes, 26 seconds
So it it doesn't end there. Brown then comes back and he says, "Have you seen these ads? They're a complete lie.17:35
17 minutes, 35 seconds
Records show the woman is not a lab as actually from Texas. She doesn't have it. She didn't have surgery as a minor.17:40
17 minutes, 40 seconds
Uh she received a double mastctomy. Uh and and wait a minute. I got to get get to this. Will you let me get to the next17:48
17 minutes, 48 seconds
page? I can't get you. We're all being patient with you.17:53
17 minutes, 53 seconds
But then he goes after Houston for being taking all this money from people who were involved with Epstein. Yeah. and18:01
18 minutes, 1 second
said, "Let's look at who was really hurting girls in this country." And that's a pretty effective ad.18:08
18 minutes, 8 seconds
And isn't it the case right now that all of this is a distraction from Epstein and Iran and gas prices?18:14
18 minutes, 14 seconds
I don't think people can be distracted when they're paying the prices that they're paying.18:19
18 minutes, 19 seconds
I agree. Over $4 a gallon. And I saw $6 here in Manhattan.18:23
18 minutes, 23 seconds
In the last election, all you heard about was the price of eggs. And they had gone up and they've come back down again. they had gone up and people feel that but they talked about it18:31
18 minutes, 31 seconds
incessantly but people did feel that oh usually have eggs I have to pay $6 a18:38
18 minutes, 38 seconds
dozen now it's it's crazy uh and that's the reason they reelected Trump I will quickly address the dransitioner18:45
18 minutes, 45 seconds
argument dransitioners and I am one I dransitioned for a short time in 2013 after the media spotlight18:53
18 minutes, 53 seconds
just caused a mental health breakdown but I did come back and I did find my Welcome back. Thank you.19:00
19 minutes
But it's such a small population of dransitioners, the regret rate is less than 1%. And there's a greater regret19:08
19 minutes, 8 seconds
rate for nose jobs and uh uh penile implants and things like that. It's amazing how this small population has become a cause celeb of the right.19:20
19 minutes, 20 seconds
Yeah, I had prostate surgery. I have some regret. I can't have children anymore. It's probably better that I can't at [laughter] that you know of19:27
19 minutes, 27 seconds
going to be when I come back to you next week. I'm going to be 73. I haven't reached the mandatory retire haven't reached the mandatory retirement age at Gay USA. I'm hanging in there.19:38
19 minutes, 38 seconds
I just want to wish Andy, everyone, please wish Andy a happy birthday.19:41
19 minutes, 41 seconds
Thank you very much. It's good. You know, I'm a gay man. to even have this many birthdays when so many of my19:48
19 minutes, 48 seconds
friends are dead uh from the 1980s and 90s early 90s anyway and uh city hall in New York put thisChapter 7: Immigration and LGBTQ issues
19:58
19 minutes, 58 seconds
picture up we told you that the mayor mayor Mdani has appropriated some money for trans20:04
20 minutes, 4 seconds
youth youth care but now advocates are saying you need to spend $15 million to support LGBTQ immigrants look at that20:14
20 minutes, 14 seconds
crowd crowd, this big multicultural crowd led by the Caribbean Equality Project and New York City Trans and Queer Coalition, and they're saying20:23
20 minutes, 23 seconds
these are specific needs, and yes, you're appropriating money for immigrant care, but you've got to acknowledge that20:31
20 minutes, 31 seconds
this is a particularly uh vulnerable group.20:34
20 minutes, 34 seconds
Money won't fix all the issues, but $15 million will make a dent. And given the status of immigrants in our country, I20:42
20 minutes, 42 seconds
have a son-in-law who is uh from India who is waiting waiting to be able to be a US citizen. And it because of the20:50
20 minutes, 50 seconds
administration and its anti-immigrant policies, it's been tied up in red tape. What's the status now?20:56
20 minutes, 56 seconds
Waiting for an appointment in uh for a green card.20:59
20 minutes, 59 seconds
A green card. Of course, people have green cards and they're still getting picked off the streets.21:04
21 minutes, 4 seconds
Yeah. People have been sent to countries they never even thought of or heard of.21:07
21 minutes, 7 seconds
I have friends with green cards who've been here forever or they never got around to doing citizenship. They're afraid to travel overseas, come back, go21:15
21 minutes, 15 seconds
through customs, and get grabbed and sent to, you know, the Congo or something.21:19
21 minutes, 19 seconds
My son-in-law won't go to an airport for that same reason. And uh I hope to accompany him to his green card appointment because I'm afraid that ICE21:27
21 minutes, 27 seconds
would be there. And you never know, right? You never know. And you could stop them.21:31
21 minutes, 31 seconds
Um no, I probably won't, but I will make a loud scene. I'm I'm I'm quite loud when I need to be. Nice knowing you.21:38
21 minutes, 38 seconds
[laughter]21:38
21 minutes, 38 seconds
Hey, uh, all I can say is I love my son-in-law. He's the greatest.21:42
21 minutes, 42 seconds
Okay. And, uh, how are we feeling about Deborah Messing? Now, of course, the star of Will and Grace. And, you know, the actually I only met her once. It wasChapter 8: State and local politics

who's running for governor on the Republican line. He's from Nassau County. We are y uh it's it you know22:13

she's and she's very anti uh uh uh Manny and yeah, she calls him a Zionist and a lot of other nasty things. Um I liked her.22:22
22 minutes, 22 seconds
Didn't she support Cynthia Nixon for governor? What didn't she support Nixon? I just know that um Blakeman uh during the debate22:30
22 minutes, 30 seconds
that aired on Tuesday night [snorts] was basically showing his true colors. How?22:36
22 minutes, 36 seconds
Uh well, by being anti-LGBT, by being anti-Mom Donnie, by anti-immigrant. By being anti-immigrant.22:43
22 minutes, 43 seconds
Yes. Absolutely. So anyway, uh Deborah, uh I would say all you've done is disgrace yourself. I mean, look, I I22:51
22 minutes, 51 seconds
have friends who are are upset with Democrats who they think are now have become more anti-semitic. All right, I22:59
22 minutes, 59 seconds
understand that. But that doesn't mean you vote for a Republican. I mean, they're they have Nazis in the party for God's sakes.23:05
23 minutes, 5 seconds
But can I just say I was raised as a Republican. I was raised by a cop and a nurse in Nassau County, Long Island, and it's very Republican. But that doesn't23:14
23 minutes, 14 seconds
mean that I am naturally going to be a Republican once I moved out of my parents sphere and learned about the world.23:22
23 minutes, 22 seconds
Uh I didn't know much about the politics of my parents. They didn't really talk about it that much. Uh I mean my mother voted for Adley Stevenson, my father23:30
23 minutes, 30 seconds
voted for Goldwater. I only found this out years later. Um but they Ken Cheryl who was the political scientist gay. He23:37
23 minutes, 37 seconds
said, "The number one reason that you will leave the thing, the party that you were brought up in is uh being LGBTQ.23:46
23 minutes, 46 seconds
That will make you leave." And that's what happened to our community, including in the last election. We were basically the only group, all of us, to23:55
23 minutes, 55 seconds
move away from the Republicans, even as certain number of blacks, a lot of Latinos, etc. were moving towards them.24:03
24 minutes, 3 seconds
Of course, they're all coming back this year, aren't they?24:05
24 minutes, 5 seconds
[sighs and gasps]24:05
24 minutes, 5 seconds
and the log cabin Republicans and all the other Peter Theel types who are um just my shake my head. I don't know what to say.24:13
24 minutes, 13 seconds
Now, Governor Hokll is infinitely better on these issues, but she has opted into a federal voucher program providing tax24:21
24 minutes, 21 seconds
credits for parents who send their kids to private and religious schools despite the opposition of of legislative leaders in the teachers union. But understand, these schools are mostly anti-LGBTQ.24:33
24 minutes, 33 seconds
Mostly mostly. and she is defending herself by saying, "Well, if parents want to, they could put that credit towards a public24:41
24 minutes, 41 seconds
school, but public schools are free. So, how does that work?" [laughter] Uh, the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Jews have come out in favor of Hoel's24:49
24 minutes, 49 seconds
decision because it benefits them. But I think she's been really targeted. It must be a political move. I don't think I think of course. Of course, it is. And uh we are24:58
24 minutes, 58 seconds
just totally losing even in blue states the separation of church and state which was which was to me the salvation of the United States to use a religious term.25:09
25 minutes, 9 seconds
And there are people who still on the right declare that there was no separation of church and state. In God we trust that25:17
25 minutes, 17 seconds
that wasn't original. That was done in the 1950s. What are you talking about?25:21
25 minutes, 21 seconds
I know they have no I mean they certainly referenced their God. They have no sense of history.25:26
25 minutes, 26 seconds
these folks who are um anti-LGBT have no sense of history.25:30
25 minutes, 30 seconds
I'm really curious to see what happens out on Long Island where the congressional district is represented by a Republican and the Democrat is Chris Galant and here's his new poster.Chapter 9: Campaign strategies
25:42
25 minutes, 42 seconds
Make politics sexy again.25:45
25 minutes, 45 seconds
Do you know what's actually sexy? My plan to bring real results to Long Island. So, look, the guy is a veteran,25:54
25 minutes, 54 seconds
you know, but his opponents leaked his promotional work that he did when he was 20 years old for Mr. S Leather in San26:02
26 minutes, 2 seconds
Francisco, including him having sex in these in these BDSM and he's doing harness wearing and things like that.26:09
26 minutes, 9 seconds
He says, "All my friends know I'm kinky." So, he's leaned into it. He hasn't slunk away.26:14
26 minutes, 14 seconds
This is 2026. This would have killed somebody in 1996. Their campaign would be dead. But not now.26:21
26 minutes, 21 seconds
Trump is is ashamed of all the uh the whoring that he does. I mean, he denies it. He goes to court. He says, "I never26:29
26 minutes, 29 seconds
did it." But of course, he's who's more guilty. He Trump has been convicted.26:34
26 minutes, 34 seconds
Well, before he was reelected here or elected again, I should say 30, you26:40
26 minutes, 40 seconds
know, 37 fraud things, also convicted in the in the Stormmy Daniels case, and yet26:48
26 minutes, 48 seconds
people elected him. But remember, Chris is a white cisgender man. Yeah.26:53
26 minutes, 53 seconds
If Chris was Christa and she was black and she was gay, I don't think people would forgive that kind of uh activity.27:03
27 minutes, 3 seconds
I think that uh there's a double standard here because he's a a a a white man.27:09
27 minutes, 9 seconds
I I agree. I would just say whatever it is, there's no sense denying it. Lean into it. Yeah. About who you are. Yeah.27:17
27 minutes, 17 seconds
All right. All right, I'm all for that.27:18
27 minutes, 18 seconds
[laughter]27:20
27 minutes, 20 seconds
Uh, big GOP donors are giving up on holding the US House and they're pulling f funds from marginal districts in New27:27
27 minutes, 27 seconds
Jersey and Iowa and Nebraska. And let's go to Alabama. Talk about these two trans women who are running for seats in the state legislature.Chapter 10: Living your truth
27:35
27 minutes, 35 seconds
Well, first of all, our hearts go out to Alabama. Just got hit by that terrible uh isas uh hurricane. But what's27:43
27 minutes, 43 seconds
happening in politics is that uh Allison Montgomery is one of these candidates and she has a really good chance of winning and she's talking about I have a picture of her here.27:52
27 minutes, 52 seconds
Yeah, let's see her. There she is. And there's her opponent. And while her opponent is making her trans identity part of his campaign, she says you're28:01
28 minutes, 1 second
not going to be getting less uh uh lower gas prices because I'm trans or higher gas prices because I'm trans. You're not28:09
28 minutes, 9 seconds
paying more at the supermarket because I'm trans. The fault of the Republicans, she says, is that they are not taking care of American uh affordability.28:18
28 minutes, 18 seconds
Well, the Republican party chairman in Alabama, Scott Stadagen, said, "We've got two men who [clears throat] have28:26
28 minutes, 26 seconds
mental disorders, who like to dress like women who think they are females on the ballot this general election." And then28:33
28 minutes, 33 seconds
he goes on and on and on. And uh he also wants to ban drag. If a man wants to dress like a woman in the privacy of28:41
28 minutes, 41 seconds
their home, roll tide, war eagle, uh, whatever you want to do, go knock yourself out. But when you want to do it28:48
28 minutes, 48 seconds
in front of a kid and minors in a sexual explicit manner, I have a problem with that. And yet, of course, these are the28:55
28 minutes, 55 seconds
uh the people who elect Donald Trump who was making u sexually suggestive remarks about the Republican candidate for US Senate in Ohio. Now, it's interesting.29:07
29 minutes, 7 seconds
Ali Montgomery. She describes herself. Are you ready? Ready.29:11
29 minutes, 11 seconds
As an experienced grassroots volunteer political organizer, a graduate of Bob Jones University. Woohoo. Which isn't totally right with you.29:19
29 minutes, 19 seconds
Yeah. Right.29:20
29 minutes, 20 seconds
And the University of Alabama and a proud Eagle Scout and a practicing Christian.29:26
29 minutes, 26 seconds
The thing is is that I bet these candidates who are opposed to trans uh anything probably have never met a trans29:34
29 minutes, 34 seconds
person or a drag queen or seen a drag show or maybe they're sitting at home in their underwear watching Rupaul. I don't know. But my feeling is that once you29:43
29 minutes, 43 seconds
get to know us, once you meet one of us, once you understand that I'm the same person I've always been, except different rapping, different outside.29:52
29 minutes, 52 seconds
I'm the same person who went to Shamanadan High School. You both went to the same high school.29:56
29 minutes, 56 seconds
Yeah. Back in Minnola. But at the same time, I am living my truth. I am not hiding who I am. And wouldn't it be great if everybody could do that?30:06
30 minutes, 6 seconds
Wouldn't it be great if everybody would be able to say, "I don't want to hide who I am anymore. or I want to be true to myself. That's what I did.30:14
30 minutes, 14 seconds
I was very lucky uh because uh when I joined Dignity, the gay Catholic group, I I became friends with Gene Hoff, who30:23
30 minutes, 23 seconds
was a trans psychiatrist for other trans people. Uh and so I learned a lot from30:30
30 minutes, 30 seconds
her. She taught a class for the dignity group about how to do peer counseling and teach and handle all these issues.30:37
30 minutes, 37 seconds
And it was it just made a tremendous difference in my life.30:40
30 minutes, 40 seconds
Well, even though I've left the Catholic faith, I am as a Jew. OC.30:45
30 minutes, 45 seconds
Yeah. I'm very I'm not I haven't gone to another one.30:48
30 minutes, 48 seconds
Well, I'm very very happy to know that after I came out as trans, two other Shamanad alumni alumna have also come30:56
30 minutes, 56 seconds
out as trans women. So, um let's just put it this way. There's nothing wrong with living your truth, no matter what31:03
31 minutes, 3 seconds
it is. No matter what it is, doesn't have to be about your gender identity.31:07
31 minutes, 7 seconds
It may be you're alcoholic or you have a gambling problem or that you need psychological help. And this what spirit31:14
31 minutes, 14 seconds
day is all about about stopping bullying for people.31:17
31 minutes, 17 seconds
Shabanad it of course builds itself as a school for for boys. It's run by Marionist Marionists who are all male. Yes.31:26
31 minutes, 26 seconds
And or well but but [laughter] obviously there were girls there.31:32
31 minutes, 32 seconds
Yes, they were. And uh there were a lot of gay people there. Absolutely.31:36
31 minutes, 36 seconds
Especially among the brothers and the priests. I know at least three which they do not acknowledge.31:41
31 minutes, 41 seconds
No they don't. And I will tell you one thing though when I went to MIA which is the retreat house for Shamanad. I went as my true self and Favalopant31:50
31 minutes, 50 seconds
said a prayer and he says please God bless our men and our woman.31:58
31 minutes, 58 seconds
Well [laughter] good. That's that's progress. So, it's something when I wrote to Shamad after I got the religion about gay stuff and I wanted to32:06
32 minutes, 6 seconds
help them get over their homophobia in 1975. I got a letter back from the president, Father Reikner, who's a total rightwing nut.32:13
32 minutes, 13 seconds
Yeah, I know. I who said, "You are you are a monoomaniac with a messiah complex." Thank you very much. That's a great compliment.32:21
32 minutes, 21 seconds
I am trying to save you. Yes.32:23
32 minutes, 23 seconds
But, uh, you should put that on your resume.32:25
32 minutes, 25 seconds
[laughter]32:25
32 minutes, 25 seconds
A monoomaniac with a messiah complex.32:28
32 minutes, 28 seconds
the uh the archbishop of um Hartford actually sent me a letter once to let me know that while he'll pray for me, he would never actually accept me as a32:36
32 minutes, 36 seconds
woman. And it's funny because the letter arrived unsolicited. Who asked you? Unsolicited after I decided to convert. Who asked you?32:44
32 minutes, 44 seconds
Crazy. Where are we?Chapter 11: Legal updates
32:45
32 minutes, 45 seconds
All right, let's go to Arizona. This is a kind of a strange decision from the Ninth Circuit. They're basically saying you don't have to have gender affirming32:54
32 minutes, 54 seconds
surgery to get your uh new birth certificate. those.32:58
32 minutes, 58 seconds
So it so the gender marker will match your authentic gender. Like mine says F now, but for 40 something years it said33:06
33 minutes, 6 seconds
M because that's what doctors looked at my body and said, "Oh, that looks like a boy." But gender is between the ears, not between the legs.33:14
33 minutes, 14 seconds
Okay. So this was a positive decision from the Ninth Circuit. All right. Uh the presidential race is is heating up33:21
33 minutes, 21 seconds
even though we're for 2028, though we're focused on the midterms. Pete Buddhajedge. Well, he's at about 9% in the early polls. The leaders are Gavin Newsome at 15, Kamla Harris at 30.33:34
33 minutes, 34 seconds
Is she running again?33:36
33 minutes, 36 seconds
AOC her h her husband doesn't want her to run. But, uh, he is building a na33:43
33 minutes, 43 seconds
large national network among Democrats, particularly among black voters in the South since he struggled with black voters in 2020.33:51
33 minutes, 51 seconds
That was an Achilles heel for him in the primaries. So, we don't know what's going to happen. It's it's 20.33:56
33 minutes, 56 seconds
Let's focus on the on the on the midterm. Let's get through that. Let's get that over with. But, I mean, it'll come up soon.Chapter 12: Funding and organizations
34:03
34 minutes, 3 seconds
Now, talk about what's going on in Fort Lauderdale with the Stonewall National Museum archives and Library.34:09
34 minutes, 9 seconds
So, uh, this particular national museum, the first and oldest, first and oldest in the country.34:16
34 minutes, 16 seconds
The CEO was basically putting out the word, hey elected leaders, we need you to stand up. We need you to support us.34:25
34 minutes, 25 seconds
Don't give in to the anti-dei movements both in the state house in Tallahassee as well as Washington. Within two hours34:32
34 minutes, 32 seconds
of his statement, the all Democrat County supervisors, the Broward County34:40
34 minutes, 40 seconds
people decided to cut all their public grant money for operating costs. And they've been doing that for decades. Why?34:48
34 minutes, 48 seconds
Well, they wouldn't give them a reason. They just said that things have changed. They wouldn't exactly specify.34:53
34 minutes, 53 seconds
They were getting a million do from January 2014 to 20 October 2026. They had gotten over a million dollars in funding.35:01
35 minutes, 1 second
It's the fear factor right now. Just like the hospitals who are cutting gender- affirming care for fear that the government will go after them, these35:09
35 minutes, 9 seconds
county leaders are also worried about what will happen if the government steps in and uh you know destroys them.35:17
35 minutes, 17 seconds
Okay, let's talk about the new CDC data.Chapter 13: Youth and identity
35:20
35 minutes, 20 seconds
Now, I'm very reluctant to cite anything from the CDC these days under RFK Jr. or whoever he's got in there. But they did35:29
35 minutes, 29 seconds
find in that young teenagers, young teenagers are less likely to identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual than a few35:37
35 minutes, 37 seconds
years ago. What they really mean is in 2021, 30% of 9th grade girls identified as lesbian or bisexual. Right.35:45
35 minutes, 45 seconds
30%. And last year 17% did. This is one little group. All the other groups, the boys, everybody, all the other age groups, it it hasn't changed. What do35:53
35 minutes, 53 seconds
you What do you think's going on? Well, it's two things. First of all, the right-wing is taking this and running with it, saying, "Look, we're getting people to stop identifying as LGBTQ.36:02
36 minutes, 2 seconds
Yay, that's not the case." Well, yes. Uh, uh, the American Principles Project, right-wing says, "Amazing what happens when you cut the36:10
36 minutes, 10 seconds
Department of Education and USAD." That's almost as stupid as the stuff Vance said this week about [laughter] about socialism.36:19
36 minutes, 19 seconds
It's just very sad that um I think people are are are scared to identify uh publicly. Um but I I'm talking about36:28
36 minutes, 28 seconds
young people. I'm talking about young people. I think that they are worried about putting their name next to an alphabet uh next to a acronym. And I36:37
36 minutes, 37 seconds
only know that because I have a gay son, a bisexual daughter, and a trans How old are they?36:43
36 minutes, 43 seconds
27, 24, and 19. And if asked, they would prefer not to identify really publicly36:52
36 minutes, 52 seconds
because it could hurt their careers. It could hurt them.36:55
36 minutes, 55 seconds
Well, listen, I have to say I went to the University of Virginia and I was closeted in the beginning of, you know, although I had a boyfriend. We were closeted. But then I went to a gay37:03
37 minutes, 3 seconds
student union meeting because we I had I had been dumped and they couldn't elect a president of the organization because37:11
37 minutes, 11 seconds
nobody wanted to put their name on it to the administration. Yeah. So I I was in a mood and I just said, "I'll do it." and the rest is history. That really37:18
37 minutes, 18 seconds
made me a gay activist. And you really I'd say you really can't go back.37:22
37 minutes, 22 seconds
No, I agree. But I will say that uh my young my youngest daughter, my trans daughter is very active in the trans population at her college, which is very affirming and that makes me feel good.37:33
37 minutes, 33 seconds
But at the same time, there are people out there. She was once chased by a stranger on the street for just being who she is.37:40
37 minutes, 40 seconds
Well, I understand. And I mean, you can you walk into a restroom and there are people who want to beat you up, you know, and sometimes they're lesbians who are not trans masculine presenting, you know.37:50
37 minutes, 50 seconds
Wow.37:51
37 minutes, 51 seconds
All right. A Tennessee appeals court overturned the v voluntary manslaughter conviction of a man who shot and killedChapter 14: Safety and violence
37:58
37 minutes, 58 seconds
a black trans woman. The court ruled that a jury should have been allowed to hear evidence about her sex assigned at38:05
38 minutes, 5 seconds
birth as part of the defense claim. If they had known that this had been someone who was once male identified, uh that might have made a difference. And38:13
38 minutes, 13 seconds
the and then this killer is going to get a new trial.38:16
38 minutes, 16 seconds
This is the trans panic defense in real life. So the trans panic defense for those who don't know is that it's38:23
38 minutes, 23 seconds
justified to kill a trans person when they reveal that they are trans because they're not a real woman. and that that should be allowed.38:31
38 minutes, 31 seconds
But they're sort of saying in and I that's reprehensible, but they're sort of saying in this case if the jury had known that this is a person who would38:38
38 minutes, 38 seconds
once identified as male, they would have shown, oh, they're stronger and could fight and the person felt more threatened by that.38:46
38 minutes, 46 seconds
And I think the victim uh was either pushed or fell down a flight of stairs and was shot. Is that right? It is. It is absolutely horrendous.38:54
38 minutes, 54 seconds
It's a murder and she was her name is Paris Lee. Mhm.38:58
38 minutes, 58 seconds
She was shot six times and prosecutors said the trajectory of of the wounds contradicted the account of the of the39:06
39 minutes, 6 seconds
perpetrator and he had no visible injuries so he wasn't threatened by anything.39:10
39 minutes, 10 seconds
But let's remember where this is happening. Tennessee. The hate state. Yep. Do you want to be the hate state?39:16
39 minutes, 16 seconds
Tennessee. All right. And we talk about some people we lost. Oh, this is hot.Chapter 15: Memorials and history
39:21
39 minutes, 21 seconds
Well, and and I'm going to link to some of these obituaries. You can read them more in full if you sign up for our email. Go to gay usatv.org39:30
39 minutes, 30 seconds
and sign up for our weekly email. We just send you one a week and we give you extras and there's a little link there39:37
39 minutes, 37 seconds
where you could support GayUSA. We'd like that.39:40
39 minutes, 40 seconds
We hope you will. But Michael Karns, he was not just a uh considered one of the first actors in Hollywood to come39:47
39 minutes, 47 seconds
out, but he was a trailblazing AIDS activist and he died at 76. Um and when he was studying as a young actor in39:56
39 minutes, 56 seconds
Chicago in ' 72, this is apppropo of what we were just talking about. He said the teachers would all say, "Oh, you got to hide who you are. They'll never let40:04
40 minutes, 4 seconds
you play straight roles if you if you come out." He said, "I wasn't going to do that. Uh I was out out and there was no way I was going to He's a pioneer.40:14
40 minutes, 14 seconds
Go back." Then RuPaul's Drag Race star uh Lucian Well, let's let's stay on him a little bit. Oh, there's more. Well, I mean,40:21
40 minutes, 21 seconds
just that, you know, he had extensive credits in the uh Well, tell us about them.40:26
40 minutes, 26 seconds
Well, I mean, we're going to we're going to link to them, but he was uh in many movies. He uh he was he was in a40:35
40 minutes, 35 seconds
television. Wait a minute. He I also want to say that he married his husband, Philip Jwig, Juwi40:44
40 minutes, 44 seconds
G, in 1992. And then Philip died the same year and he wanted to be a dad. He adopted a baby girl in 1995.40:54
40 minutes, 54 seconds
Uh she survives him. But he got many awards for all the work that he did and and the activism that he that he did uh especially around AIDS and gay stuff.41:05
41 minutes, 5 seconds
Oh, may memories be a blessing. How now? Go ahead.41:07
41 minutes, 7 seconds
Well, uh I was going to mention that the next obituary I want to tell you about is Lucian uh P. Did I think I said that41:15
41 minutes, 15 seconds
right? Lucian Pian, who was dead at 46, a Rupaul's Drag Race star, hit by a car. And there's a picture of Lucian.41:22
41 minutes, 22 seconds
He was a former judge and a producer on RuPaul's Drag Race and a music director there. Uh 46 years old. He was in 2341:31
41 minutes, 31 seconds
episodes of RuPaul's Drag Race and in the music department for the 2007 film Hairspray. Now, uh41:39
41 minutes, 39 seconds
what a great movie. apparently um had had a troubled life after the show and41:46
41 minutes, 46 seconds
uh there's intimations that uh he was uh schizophrenic not intimations Mark41:52
41 minutes, 52 seconds
Shaman the famous award-winning composer and lyricist Mark Shaman said he had a tragic descent to schizophrenia42:01
42 minutes, 1 second
uh that showed all that loved him how impenetrable mental illness can be but that he also goes on to extol how42:10
42 minutes, 10 seconds
wonderful he was, but he was he was very very troubled.42:13
42 minutes, 13 seconds
Yeah. But also hit by a car, so we would imagine I I don't know for sure, but maybe uh his troubles did not cause his42:21
42 minutes, 21 seconds
demise. We'll have to see when the investigation is concluded.42:24
42 minutes, 24 seconds
Well, he had been posting several disturbing reels to his Instagram that left people urging him to go to the hospital. So, I you know who we just don't know exactly what happened. Okay.42:33
42 minutes, 33 seconds
But he, you know, admiral life. And then I had, I admit I had never heard of this gentleman, but he was 98. Bill W. Jones.42:43
42 minutes, 43 seconds
Uh, he died in San Raphael, California.42:47
42 minutes, 47 seconds
A gay activist. He became the first single man in the United States to adopt a child. His adoption of Aaron Hunter42:55
42 minutes, 55 seconds
Jones opened the doors for single parent and gay couple adoption in America. That's what gay people used to do.43:02
43 minutes, 2 seconds
Sometimes we would adopt each other to have a legal relationship before we could get married or have domestic partnerships. Yeah. So he did that and43:10
43 minutes, 10 seconds
he he was the subject of a documentary called A Family of My Own. He was also uh the uh43:18
43 minutes, 18 seconds
uh he was owner of a co-ed bath house called Sutro Baths in San Francisco. He led the Gay Fathers of Northern43:25
43 minutes, 25 seconds
California uh and other groups. He wrote a he wrote a 22 memoir 19202243:33
43 minutes, 33 seconds
memoir, Bachelor Father. Uh anyway, all right.43:37
43 minutes, 37 seconds
But let's also remember in honor of Bill Jones, there are still laws in some states that prevent gay couples from43:44
43 minutes, 44 seconds
adopting. You know, it's still on the books and that's a crime. That's a crime that we would not allow.43:51
43 minutes, 51 seconds
What What are you talking about? Uh, I couldn't set the examples, but I'm saying that there are lots [snorts] of policies where a gay couple would be denied adoption.44:00
44 minutes
Well, well, well, we'll have to look into that. See if that's legal. You should be able to sue if that happens to you. I know these religious agencies44:09
44 minutes, 9 seconds
have been winning the right to deny gay couples the right to adopt.44:14
44 minutes, 14 seconds
And we are losing the right to stop anti-gay people from adopting. And from what I understand, these are laws that are on the books that aren't being44:22
44 minutes, 22 seconds
enforced. But should a Supreme Court make a decision, I see the laws would come back.44:26
44 minutes, 26 seconds
International news. Well, the Nobel Peace Prize, Donald failed again.Chapter 16: International news
44:31
44 minutes, 31 seconds
[laughter] Uh Na'vi Ple, she's a South African jurist of Tamil Indian origin. She was the former United44:39
44 minutes, 39 seconds
Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Nobel Committee cited her efforts to promote peace and international law because she's on the44:48
44 minutes, 48 seconds
she's involved with the international uh criminal tribunal uh and worked on the Rwanda case and the Gaza case. And44:58
44 minutes, 58 seconds
she was also very very uh strong on LGBTQ rights. She put that front and center. She she said back in 2011, "This45:08
45 minutes, 8 seconds
debate is unfolding in front of us. It goes to the heart of what we believe. It challenges us to live up to the fundamental principle on which in the45:16
45 minutes, 16 seconds
end all our human rights, the equal worth and equal dignity of all human beings. That is not in the Republican party platform."45:25
45 minutes, 25 seconds
And apparently uh Donald Trump raged against her selection because he felt that she was nobody. Doesn't sound like a nobody to me.45:35
45 minutes, 35 seconds
Soon you will be nobody. Uh uh Donald, you will you will you will meet what all of us meet in the end. In other45:44
45 minutes, 44 seconds
international news, we go to India. Uh Mad Sandu, a Punjabi social media influencer, makeup artist and LGBTQ45:52
45 minutes, 52 seconds
activist was shot on Saturday in Amrist uh Amriitsar that is a capital of Punjab46:00
46 minutes
and a major tourist center. and uh two men on a motorbike apparently shot him dead. Just horrible. And that's what46:08
46 minutes, 8 seconds
still happens in parts of our world where people are targeted just because of who they are.46:12
46 minutes, 12 seconds
But this is a a person who had 230,000 Instagram followers. I have I have about 10. Uh I got 11. I'll follow you.46:20
46 minutes, 20 seconds
He post he [laughter] posted about makeup, pop culture, LGBTQ issues, popular guest on podcasts, appeared in46:27
46 minutes, 27 seconds
the Punjabi film uh Hey Bul. Yeah, that's right. Good pronunciation.46:32
46 minutes, 32 seconds
He he also faced anti-gay backlash on social media and would respond by saying,46:39
46 minutes, 39 seconds
"God made me the way I am, but murdered." And this was a targeted killing. And they've arrested six people46:47
46 minutes, 47 seconds
in conjunction with it. And these people felt uh he w uh he was an insult to Punjab. Uh so it's like almost like an46:56
46 minutes, 56 seconds
honor killing of some kind, like a mafia killing, you might say.46:58
46 minutes, 58 seconds
Even it's just outrageous. Yeah.47:01
47 minutes, 1 second
[snorts] And then we we had told you about these guys uh who run Pink News which we rely on here in Cohen and James. Yeah.47:08
47 minutes, 8 seconds
K USA Benjamin Cohen and his husband Anthony James. Oh, look at that picture.47:13
47 minutes, 13 seconds
And with their child and the the BBC had done a big story about them about how47:20
47 minutes, 20 seconds
they were guilty of sexual misconduct on the job and uh harassment of staff and all of this proved to be false. So the47:29
47 minutes, 29 seconds
BBC had to settle. We had reported on it when they made the charges. So now we're saying this was all a lie and the BBC47:37
47 minutes, 37 seconds
had to apologize to them unreservedly and to uh uh pay a settlement to them.47:44
47 minutes, 44 seconds
Well, I've interviewed Ben Cohen and I got to tell you, he's a good upstanding man and I'm happy for him to get this uh article uh you know wiped out and an apology.47:54
47 minutes, 54 seconds
Right. That's great. Okay. All right. Uh AIDS and health news uh in ZambiaChapter 17: Health and development
48:01
48 minutes, 1 second
uh Zambia and the United States have signed a 2.5 billion billion dollar uh48:08
48 minutes, 8 seconds
package bilateral health agreement uh after tense negotiations. Now we've been going around to these countries with guns to their heads.48:17
48 minutes, 17 seconds
Give us your minerals. Give us your your your uh special rocks.48:21
48 minutes, 21 seconds
But apparently they didn't have to bend to a lot of that stuff. They they got the deal anyway. It does require them to48:27
48 minutes, 27 seconds
send uh oh the health minister of uh Zambia said requiring us to send biological specimens to the US that's48:35
48 minutes, 35 seconds
been removed and the agreement would not allow the sharing of individual patient records. So some of these countries are48:42
48 minutes, 42 seconds
standing up but I mean this is after they cut all the USA ID funding HIV tuberculosis it's all skyrocketing over there because of our pullout.48:53
48 minutes, 53 seconds
Yeah. and and it's a money grab because what they were looking to do is get these rare minerals that are crucial to developing49:01
49 minutes, 1 second
uh data centers and cell phones and other things.49:04
49 minutes, 4 seconds
Now, Zambia made a deal, but uh four countries have been denied all health funding after refusing to concede to US bullying over bilateral health deals.49:14
49 minutes, 14 seconds
Wow. All right. Okay. Entertainment news. Entertainment news. Yay. Down to our last nine minutes. I love this.Chapter 18: Arts and culture
49:22
49 minutes, 22 seconds
All right. Uh the Newf Fest film festival is underway in New York and it's now we just want to say to our viewers around the world the offerings of Newfest are available online.49:33
49 minutes, 33 seconds
That's right. You can stream it and watch these films. They should go to Newfest nefes.org49:40
49 minutes, 40 seconds
and check out what's running. A lot of lot of great stuff. I'll be at the US premiere of the Gays Against Guns documentary on Friday.49:49
49 minutes, 49 seconds
That's awesome. And it's down the block, too.49:51
49 minutes, 51 seconds
Okay. Okay. Well, that makes it better on 23rd Street. How about Elsenor?49:55
49 minutes, 55 seconds
Well, Andrew Scott, of we've talked about this movie. Andrew Scott is playing Ian Charlesson who died of AIDS,50:03
50 minutes, 3 seconds
a gay actor who died of AIDS back in n I want to say 199 I think 91250:09
50 minutes, 9 seconds
one two and famous the film is about him taking on the role of Hamlet as he's dying of AIDS in Charleston. So anyway,50:18
50 minutes, 18 seconds
not to be and it it looks terrific. And Andrew Scott says, "Look, I welcome things like Heartstoppper, Heated Rivalry, and all those things that are50:27
50 minutes, 27 seconds
joyful. I really do, but he says, "It troubles me a little bit because I think people perhaps don't want to go back to50:35
50 minutes, 35 seconds
a time when we're talking about the AIDS crisis or we're you're talking about when it was cred incredibly difficult50:42
50 minutes, 42 seconds
for gay people. We think it's still difficult of course in many parts of the world. Um he says he thinks that comes from a place of shame. I don't want to50:50
50 minutes, 50 seconds
go back there. I don't want to see that anymore. There's something a little troubling about this. And so, you know, he's he's50:59
50 minutes, 59 seconds
I'm looking forward to it because it's got a fabulous cast and it's a great movie. I wrote about this for Out Magazine. You saw the movie?51:06
51 minutes, 6 seconds
I have only seen scenes. But what I want to say is the shame that Andrew Scott was referring to. He said the shame is51:13
51 minutes, 13 seconds
on the governments, the governments who stop funding for AIDS. And what he wants people to do is take this in and51:20
51 minutes, 20 seconds
remember our history. And we could still enjoy heated rivalry and hearts stopper, but we should remember our history.51:25
51 minutes, 25 seconds
Absolutely. He he's right on on that. He got a he got a standing ovation, huge ovation over these remarks. I can51:32
51 minutes, 32 seconds
remember, you know, Harvey Firestein, he used to get a list of people who were who had AIDS. This is very early in the AIDS crisis. And he was well known in51:41
51 minutes, 41 seconds
the early 80s, too. I mean, he's of course well known now. And he would just call people cold. How are you? How you51:48
51 minutes, 48 seconds
doing? It's Harvey, you know, and he would talk to them. Um, but and but when he spoke at GMHC benefits, and I'm not51:56
51 minutes, 56 seconds
knocking GMHC, [snorts] they said, Harvey, you got to stop talking about AIDS. I mean, like reminding people how52:04
52 minutes, 4 seconds
terrible it is. We don't like that. I mean, it it was this was something that he ran into uh that people don't want to52:12
52 minutes, 12 seconds
be reminded about how how horrible it is. They want hope, all those kinds of things. It was interesting. Uh, I was deny this J8C, but I have it from Harvey's mouth.52:21
52 minutes, 21 seconds
Well, except for the backed up movement and all the people who stood up and protested, we wouldn't have gotten the funding we finally did get. So, how52:30
52 minutes, 30 seconds
about uh another one? Let's uh talk about um what should we go to? You want to go to Comic-Con? You you have a couple. Yes.52:37
52 minutes, 37 seconds
I I was at ComicCon, a New York Comic-Con at the Javvis Center just this past weekend, and I met uh Hunter Schaefer. Hunter Schaefer is an52:46
52 minutes, 46 seconds
outranswoman. She's co-star. She's on the right and she is star co-starring with the woman on the left, Michelle Yo.52:53
52 minutes, 53 seconds
Oh, Michelle Yo. And they are co-stars. Oscar winner.52:56
52 minutes, 56 seconds
Yes. Oscar winner. And they are co-stars of a new series coming next month to Amazon called Bladeunner 2099. It's the53:05
53 minutes, 5 seconds
sequel to the sequel to Bladeunner from 2017. And she plays a human undercover53:11
53 minutes, 11 seconds
as a replicant, a robot. And she's an outtrans woman. And what was great about the whole panel, she didn't talk about being trans. Nobody asked her about53:20
53 minutes, 20 seconds
being trans. She's just an actress. I love that. Uh, also at Comic-Con, I met Murray Hill and Peppermint. Murray Hill53:27
53 minutes, 27 seconds
is an author of his own memoir. There he is on the left. I think you can figure that out.53:31
53 minutes, 31 seconds
Drag queen. Drag King and he wrote a book called Showbiz about his life as a drag king and trans. And there's Peppermint who was the uh interviewer53:39
53 minutes, 39 seconds
for this panel in the Pride Lounge. Yes, Comic-Con had a pride lounge just for events for queer folks. It was great.53:46
53 minutes, 46 seconds
And then the last I want to just give a shout out to Kareem Diane. Dian Dion, sorry. Kareem Diane is a53:54
53 minutes, 54 seconds
right there in the middle in the middle with the beautiful beige outfit. He is the first outgay clling on. Can you see a picture of him? There54:02
54 minutes, 2 seconds
he is. and he told me that in an interview, the next season of Star Trek Starfleet Academy in March 2027 is very,54:11
54 minutes, 11 seconds
very gay. Very, very gay. So, I love that Star Trek has always been ahead of its time in many, many ways.54:18
54 minutes, 18 seconds
Well, he's one of four queer actors on the show. Tignaro, Gina Yashir, Karice Brooks, and Kareem DNA.54:27
54 minutes, 27 seconds
That's great. I saw a screening of the movie uh Tenzig. Tenzig.54:34
54 minutes, 34 seconds
This is about the the first people to reach the summit of Everest. Of course, everybody knows uh Tom Hston who plays54:43
54 minutes, 43 seconds
Edmund Hillary, the guy from New Zealand who was part of the expedition. But of course, he was led by the guide uh54:51
54 minutes, 51 seconds
Tenzing Nor played by Genden Funtock fun.54:56
54 minutes, 56 seconds
Uh, and the focus of the film is on Tens. Yes. Not a title show.55:02
55 minutes, 2 seconds
Not on the whites. [laughter] And I I was very struck by I have to say by something Hston said in the talk afterwards. They said, "Well, what did55:10
55 minutes, 10 seconds
you take from this?" He said, "What I take from it is we all rise together."55:16
55 minutes, 16 seconds
[sighs]55:17
55 minutes, 17 seconds
And of course, I mean, this is what we're missing in our society is that we are all in this together and we don't55:25
55 minutes, 25 seconds
need to be enemies. And then uh there's a movie opening October 26 in theaters, A Talent for Murder, starring Helen55:32
55 minutes, 32 seconds
Mirren as the uh uh the author, right?55:37
55 minutes, 37 seconds
Patricia Highmith, the author of the Ripley series and other books. had said of the Swiss Alps and also fe features55:44
55 minutes, 44 seconds
Alden Eron right there who is someone who comes to try to persuade her to write something else in the Ripley series. Now she was a piece of work uh55:54
55 minutes, 54 seconds
and the film does not shy away from her uglier side anti-semitism and racism but uh Juliet Stevens Stevenson is also in56:02
56 minutes, 2 seconds
the movie and she's in the Elsenor movie as well.56:05
56 minutes, 5 seconds
Did you like both of those? Did you would you recommend both those?56:07
56 minutes, 7 seconds
I haven't seen Taliper Murder. I saw Tenzing. It's a it's it's a terrific movie and it's very inspiring. And but56:14
56 minutes, 14 seconds
not inspiring is the Saturday Night Live opening with Shane Gillis full of sexist and hobophobic humor and rightfully called out too.56:24
56 minutes, 24 seconds
He declared the women he declared that women at the gym dress like before making graphic jokes about their bodies. He went on to call his sisters56:32
56 minutes, 32 seconds
fat, adding an epithet, uh, and suggest he looks like a lesbian and to say that he had balded directly into a Hitler56:41
56 minutes, 41 seconds
haircut. Now, Dan Levy, the outgay actor, took him on. How is this still possible? I just want to say I worked on the first season of Saturday Night Live.56:50
56 minutes, 50 seconds
I was a page at NBC. Wow. And I I used to take them on when they did anti-gay stuff and go over to Jane Curtain, the only normal one, and say after the dress56:59
56 minutes, 59 seconds
rehearsal, don't don't do something like that. They'd probably do it anyway.57:04
57 minutes, 4 seconds
It has been full of sophomoric, anti-gay humor, too, anti-trans. These are cheap, bigoted jokes. And I blame Lauren57:12
57 minutes, 12 seconds
Michaels, who thinks he's being transgressive, and it's just being stupid.57:17
57 minutes, 17 seconds
Well, he said that he would not ban Shane from coming back. And this was his third appearance. And he also said the f-word on the east coast. They heard it57:26
57 minutes, 26 seconds
and it got bleeped out for the west coast and the central time zone.57:29
57 minutes, 29 seconds
I always thought we had a 5-second delay.57:31
57 minutes, 31 seconds
Well, what can I tell you? Apparently the uh the f-word slipped out. And I like the fact that uh Dan called out on57:38
57 minutes, 38 seconds
men to stand up and not uh allow this kind of bigotry to continue.57:43
57 minutes, 43 seconds
15 seconds. Final message for our viewers. Uh Dawn Andis, I want to say happy spirit day. Stand up for bullying. Stand up for bullying.57:52
57 minutes, 52 seconds
Absolutely. You can do it. Thanks, Andy. It's been great.
