President Donald Trump meets with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in the Oval Office of the White House on March 19.

Things got crazy awkward during an Oval Office meeting between President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, when a reporter asked Trump why he hadn’t warned Japan before attacking Iran.

“One thing, you don't want to signal too much,” Trump said. “Who knows better about surprise than Japan, okay? Hey, why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor?”

Trump appeared to register the room’s abrupt discomfort with his remark.

“Okay? Right?” he continued. “He's asking me, ‘Do you believe in surprise’—I think much more so than us. And we had to surprise them, and we did.”

Takaichi is in the U.S. seeking to smooth over relations with Trump, who has criticized Japan for not helping him clean up the fallout from the war he started with Iran.

Trump’s Iran Blunders Suddenly Look Darker After Damning New Leaks Hit

As brutal revelations emerge about Trump’s handling of the war, a foreign policy expert explains why he won’t be able to extricate us from this debacle anytime soon—and provides a roadmap to what’s next.

For Donald Trump, the news is getting worse on his war against Iran. The New York Times reports that the Trump team badly miscalculated Iran’s response to the American invasion, leading to a developing energy fiasco. The Times also reports that some officials are pessimistic about the lack of any real strategy to end the war, adding this: “They have been careful not to express that directly to the president, who has repeatedly declared that the military operation is a complete success.” Their fear of telling Trump the truth about our fix is highly unnerving. We’re also learning that the United States was likely responsible for bombing the Iranian elementary school. We talked to Columbia political scientist Elizabeth Saunders, author of a new piece on this whole mess. We discuss Iran’s closing of the Strait of Hormuz, why Trump can’t easily end the war even if he wants to, what it means that officials are leaking dismay about the war’s direction, and what likely lies ahead. Listen to this episode here. A transcript is here.

Trump warns NATO faces ‘very bad future’ if allies fail to help US in Iran: Report

US President Donald Trump, in an interview with the Financial ‌Times (FT), has warned that NATO faces a “very bad future” if allies fail to assist in opening up the Strait of Hormuz.

“We have a thing called NATO,” Trump, who has often criticised Washington’s allies in the US-led military alliance, told the publication.

“We’ve been very sweet. We didn’t have to help them with Ukraine. Ukraine is thousands of miles away from us … But we helped them. Now we’ll see if they help us. Because I’ve long said that we’ll be there for them but they won’t be there for us. And I’m not sure that they’d be there,” he said.

When asked to specify the help he needed, the publication reported Trump said “whatever it takes”. He also expressed frustration with the UK’s stance.

“The UK might be considered the number one ally, the longest serving et cetera and when I asked for them to come, they didn’t want to come,” he told the publication. “And as soon as we basically wiped out the danger capacity from Iran, they said, ‘oh well we’ll send two ships’, and I said, ‘we need these ships before we win, not after we win’. I’ve long said that NATOis a one-way street.”

Trump also told the FT he could also delay his summit with China’s President Xi Jinping later this month as he presses the Chinese government to help unblock the key waterway.

“It’s only appropriate that people who are the beneficiaries of the Strait will help to make sure that ‌nothing bad happens there,” Trump told the FT, arguing that China and Europe rely heavily on oil from the Gulf region, unlike the US.

U.S. conducts major bombing of strategic Iran Island, Trump says

President Trump said the U.S. military conducted a massive strike on Kharg Island in Iran - the center of the country's oil exports.

Why it matters: The strategic Island hosts Iran key oil export facilities. 80-90 percent of Iranian oil is exported from the Island.

  • The White House has been considering a ground operation to take over the island as one of many options presented by the Pentagon ahead of the war with Iran.
  • The strike was a "shot across the bow" by Trump to signal to the Iranians they should stop closing the Strait of Hormuz which has dramatically disrupted the global oil market.
  • Trump made clear in a post on Truth Social that the oil facilities on the island were not targeted this time, but warned they will be if Iran doesn't stop its attacks on ships in the Strait.

What he is saying: "Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island," Trump wrote.

  • "For reasons of decency, I have chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island. However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision," he added.
  • Trump called on the members of the Iranian military to lay down their arms, "and save what’s left of their country, which isn’t much!"

Go deeper: Hegseth claims Iran's supreme leader is "wounded and likely disfigured"
