Democrats deliver a historic ass-whooping

Attacking trans kids didn’t work.

President Donald Trump making the election about himself didn’t work.

Redistricting didn’t work.

Mass immigration raids with murderous ICE goons didn’t work.

Massive money advantages and Elon Musk’s corrupt cash didn’t work.

Stupid arches, ballrooms, and the Reflecting Pool didn’t work.

Talking about Jon Husted’s stupid ass didn’t work.

Pretend outrage over the Cheesecake Factory didn’t work.

And Republicans suffered a historically massive defeat because they don’t work.

They let an addled, corrupt, morally bankrupt madman take over their party, then passively watched as he ground their party into dust.

At a moment that demanded courage and conviction, they cowered before the MAGA cult. Now they’re paying the price.

It’ll be a while before we get a full accounting of the GOP’s losses, but the scale of the Democratic victory is already staggering.

Democrats are on track for a double-digit Senate majority and a massive 70-plus-seat majority in the House.

Texas is seismic:

Think about what that means. Texas, the very heart of the modern conservative movement, has gone from one of the reddest states in the country to one where Republicans needed an aggressively gerrymandered state Senate map just to preserve their majority. Under a fair map, Democrats would have captured a trifecta.

Imagine Republicans winning the governorship and both legislative chambers in California or New York. Unfathomable, right?

And yet, that’s essentially what Democrats just pulled off in Texas.

Georgia delivered another stunning result:

Democrats swept every statewide elected office and flipped the state House, likely turning a 99-81 Republican majority into a 92-88 Democratic one.

Wisconsin:

And those are hardly the only state-level victories.

Other legislative chambers confirmed flipped as of publication:

Let’s not pretend this happened because Americans suddenly fell in love with the Democratic Party. Democrats aren’t particularly popular, either. But voters looked at what Republicans have done with their power, and delivered an unmistakable verdict.

They’ve now entrusted Democrats with an extraordinary opportunity. These swings are just unbelievable:

Winning elections is one thing. Delivering for the American people, restoring faith in government, and reversing the damage the Trump administration has inflicted on the very fabric of our society will be something else entirely.

Democrats will have to earn the trust voters placed in them today.

But that’s tomorrow’s challenge.

Tonight, we celebrate.

We earned this.

We The People delivered this historic ass whooping. We won a major battle in the Epsteiners uncivil war on us. If we'd lost US democracy would be gone.

Now we need to maintain discipline. Stay positive toward our side. Keep fighting The Enemy. They have stolen trillions from us and will continue to steal until we stop them.

  2. Comment by dmilotte.

Of course the great yellow domed dotard did not blame himself nor give any democrat credit ... "Vote like I was on the ballot" - exactly, dr grift

  3. Comment by Buck72.

If it hasn't been said already, Chuck Schumer needs to go. He still believes he can work with Trump and the wreckage of the Republican Party. And Hakeem Jeffries?

    • Reply by DemInRuralOH.

That's why Trump says he's canceling foreign aid to Israel. He's going to make Schumer and Jeffries work hard to make sure that doesn't happen.

I saw the Inquirer finally called the PA State Senate as majority D. Trifecta, baby.

  6. Comment by kaes.

I hope that this chills out the chatter that Dems need to join with Republicans on anti-trans policy in order to win "red-state" elections. I'm not expecting much needed employment, health care, and educational equality bills to pass this congress, but the nightmare scenarios of comprehensive health care bans and education restrictions are less likely to pass. And we no longer will see MTG and Boebert wasting committees to harass trans people.

Priorities I would like to see:

    1. Eliminate the electoral college

    2. D C statehood and perhaps even puerto rico.

    3. impeachment hearings for Alito and Thomas.

    4. Immediately restore the social safety net.

    5. Immediately subpoena every ice agent in america.

    6. War powers act.

    So much more.

I like all of your ideas, but let's start with anti-corruption bills.

We owe immense gratitude to Beto O’Rourke and Stacey Abrams; we are reaping what they sowed.

I was thinking something very similar

What's up with Lauren Boebert? Has it been called?

    • Reply by Simnsays.

      I don't think so.

  10. Comment by ElimuNzuri.

Let's remember the important statement at the end of this article: "Democrats will have to earn the trust voters placed in them today." That's crucial. I also urge Democrats to listen to the senators and house reps from the so-called "red states." Those are the areas where earning the trust is most important.

  11. Comment by Perlinator.

They tried to scare us by claiming that all of the Democrats are communists. I guess this election could be seen as a Commie tsunami.

  12. Comment by potteryfan.

I’m so proud of all the people all over the country who used the power of their vote to tell republicans “ENOUGH!! We’re not going to put up with your shit anymore!”

I’m especially proud to be a Wisconsinite today. Not only did we stand up and elect David Crowley as our governor (!!!), but our state legislature is now a beautiful shade of blue! We’ve had a long, tough road coming back from the bad old days of the odious Scott Walker, but yesterday we got it DONE!

    • Reply by Jeffersonian Democrat.

well, I'm overseas, but we couldn't dislodge our MAGA in VA 05

  13. Comment by Feto Gomez.

I am in shock. A little money in Florida and Mississippi could have made it even bigger.

    • Reply by Mike Coolidge.

Nobody thought Mississippi was in play! This is probably the biggest beatdown in midterm history

    • Reply by Progressive Homeschooler.

Agreed. Nixon came so close to winning. The FL governor's race was about the same margin as the senate race. Imagine if the DNC actually spent money here. Florida would be on that list of flipped states if the party hadn't written us off. I'm trying to take comfort in the knowledge that Ashley Moody will be sitting with the minority party unable to cause damage.

    • Reply by Simnsays.

I know I should be very happy this morning but I'm so disappointed in Florida. The votes were pretty close but I agree, the powers to be should be paying closer attention to Florida. The influx of white, affluent retirees from Ohio and PA have turned us Red and stupid and run up our housing costs. And don't get me started on Amendment 3.

    • Reply by Shibboleths.

We'll have to be satisfied with getting 97% of what we hoped for, I guess.

    • Reply by thetruthinator.

Exactly , exit polls showed that corruption was the #1 issue for voters . A targeted ad campaign in FL hammering home Moody's Project Hope shenanigans could have pushed Angie across the finish line.

    • Reply by Creamy Goodness.

We’re probably winning Mississippi Senate, though?

  14. Comment by MrSampson15.

Something I ate yesterday tore me a new (Trump's favorite Jon Husted body part) this morning. I hope these results are doing the same to the Giant Orange Turd right now.

  15. Comment by almostserious.

lets be sure to only look forward, not back. Moderate all positions to ensure we have moderate republican buy in, and generally go into the fetal position until 2028!

    • Reply by CyberMindGrrl.

Surely you're not serious? There need to be INVESTIGATIONS and CRIMINAL CHARGES. Failing to hold Republicans accountable is how we got here in the first place.

    • Reply by almostserious.

that's very partisan of you. the american people don't want partisan retribution. right now we need to keep our powder dry for 2028.

    • Reply by CyberMindGrrl.

Oh yeah that's why we won so huge. Nobody wants to hold Republicans accountable.

      GTFOH with that shit.

    • Reply by Miss Blue.

We can walk and chew gum. Bury Trump in bills to veto that help every day Americans AND investigate publicly the corruption.

    • Reply by CyberMindGrrl.

AND abolish ICE while we're at it. AND defund the war in Iran while we're at it. AND end the stupid tariff war while we're at it.

But for the love of God, we CANNOT allow these motherfuckers to get away with what they've done to this country. And I don't give a flying FUCK if that sounds too "partisan" for some people. We took Congress back and the American people want to see us use that power and not just roll over and "look forward and not back", for Christ's sake.

    • Reply by Feto Gomez.

Sarcasm for sure! Remember they win and govern from the most extreme right wing position with no talk of compromise. Dmocrats win and we must move to the center!!

    • Reply by almostserious.

No. We need a third way here. We need to govern and that means for all Americans. The US is a center right country. We can course correct and shave off the hard left progressive positions that swill turn off so many independents and republicans. By capitulating now we can save time later and get bi partisan legislation thoug quickly . We can forgive. Like talarico said last night…. An open hand is better than a closed fist. Or something like that.

    • Reply by analemma.

Talarico said that while saying that the billionaires are the enemy and advocating for universal health care. The supposedly radical positions are the mainstream. It is the so-called moderates who are out of touch.

    • Reply by Jeffersonian Democrat.

It's not fucking partisan, it's consistent with my oath to uphold and defend the US FUCKING CONSTITUTION and the FUCKING RULE OF LAW.

If that is 'partisan' then I am partisan.

This is how we ended up with Trump in the first place, nobody prosecuted Nixon, and those who committed war crimes in Iraq also got away with it.

      For fuck's sake people!

    • Reply by Jazzmaster61.

TN. They always disappoint. *from an ex-Tennesean

    • Reply by Giovanni Giorgio.

Does that have more to do with African American folks being disenfranchised? Or what else is going on there?

    • Reply by Miss Blue.

At least Justin won. They tried to gerrymander him out and it didn't work. There is hope.

  18. Comment by bobrrkona.

House district PA-1 has flipped blue. Republican Brian Fitzpatrick has had notoriety in recent months for going against Trump, but he was beaten by Democrat Bob Harvie, at almost 53% of the vote.

I grew up in Bucks County and while I have not lived there for over 50 years, I still follow their local politics. This district was moderate-to-liberal Republican in the old days.

Fitzpatrick was not a bad guy. He is a former FBI agent. I wouldn't have been too concerned had he won.

But he lost, and that's just icing on the cake for my election celebration.
