Trump Launches U.S. Invasion of Venezuela, Announces Maduro is in Custody
The U.S. military launched large-scale bombing strikes against the Venezuelan capital of Caracas in the middle of the night Saturday morning. Multiple Venezuelan military and communications targets were hit and U.S. military helicopters were seen flying over the city.
Trump confirmed in a Truth Social post that he ordered the strike, and stated that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife have been taken into custody and flown out of the country. Trump said the strike was carried out in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement.
The Maduro government released a statement following the attack which read in part when translated from Spanish:
The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela rejects, repudiates, and denounces before the international community the extremely grave military aggression perpetrated by the current Government of the United States of America against Venezuelan territory and population in the civilian and military localities of the city of Caracas, capital of the Republic, and the states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira. This act constitutes a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter, especially its articles 1 and 2, which establish respect for sovereignty, the legal equality of States, and the prohibition of the use of force. Such aggression threatens international peace and stability, specifically in Latin America and the Caribbean, and puts the lives of millions of people at grave risk.
Sources confirmed that Congress, including the Senate Armed Services Committee and the so-called gang of 8 was not informed of the attack prior to it happening. Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), a combat veteran of the Iraq war, called the strike "illegal" in a post on X, and said the attack on Caracas constituted the "Second unjustified war in my lifetime."
This is a developing story.
