house
and senate we talk about it all the time but it's democratic governors
who are serving on the front lines of the fights against president
trump's agenda0:12

they actually have power to do something according to the cook political report some of the most competitive governors races0:19

in the country are taking shape in Arizona, Iowa, Georgia, Nevada and Wisconsin.0:25

One problem for Republicans ahead of Election Day, Trump doesn't exactly seem enthusiastic about visiting those states.0:33
33 seconds
Here he is in Wisconsin on Friday. I don't need this. I got elected.0:38
38 seconds
I don't have what the hell do I have to be here for?0:41
41 seconds
I got elected. I'm here because I like the farmer.0:43
43 seconds
I mean, when you think about it, I guess there's a lot of truth to that, right?0:47

I could be home right now in the beautiful White House, enjoying watching somebody else on television talking.0:54

Joining us now is a candidate for governor in one of those states, former Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes.1:00
1 minute
Lieutenant Governor, thank you so much for joining us.1:03
1 minute, 3 seconds
I want to also play something else from President Trump's appearance on Friday with these farmers talking about fertilizer.1:11
1 minute, 11 seconds
Listen to of this.1:13
1 minute, 13 seconds
Your fertilizer prices are going to go way down, just like they were four months ago.1:18
1 minute, 18 seconds
Your fertilizer is down, your energy is down, your oil, your gas is all coming way down.1:24
1 minute, 24 seconds
We're
also helping bring down grocery prices for hard-working Americans, and
they're coming down very rapidly. Remember, I inherited these prices.1:32
1 minute, 32 seconds
I didn't start. My prices were great.1:36
1 minute, 36 seconds
In the president's view, Everything is coming down very rapidly.1:40
1 minute, 40 seconds
I don't think that the facts bear that out just yet.1:44
1 minute, 44 seconds
Does gaslighting work in Wisconsin? Well, thanks again for having me.1:49
1 minute, 49 seconds
And I'm just going to say that why do we have to wait for prices to go down.1:52
1 minute, 52 seconds
And for the president to say that he inherited, he's been in office for a year and a half now.1:57
1 minute, 57 seconds
He drove these prices up with illegal wars of choice, bombing Iran, invade another2:07
2 minutes, 7 seconds
WE
HAVE TO TELL SOMEBODY THAT THEY HAVE TO WAIT A FEW MORE WEEKS FOR PRICE
TO GO DOWN, LET ME TELL YOU, THERE HAS BEEN PERMANENT HARM AND2:16
2 minutes, 16 seconds
PERMANENT
DAMAGE DONE TO SMALL DAMAGE TO FAMILY FARMERS AND CONSUMERS ALSO WHO
HAVE HAD TO PAY THE INCREASED COST DUE TO DONALD TRUMP'S POOR DECISION
MAKING.2:27
2 minutes, 27 seconds
NOW,
TO THAT POINT WITH THE GAS PRICES STILL UP AT HISTORIC HIGHS, PEOPLE
HAVE HAD TO PUT OFF VACATIONS FOR THE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND2:36
2 minutes, 36 seconds
THAT
WE HAD A LITTLE WHILE AGO, PEOPLE ARE MAKING VERY DIFFICULT DECISIONS
ABOUT WHAT THEY CAN AND CAN'T DO WITH THEIR SUMMER THAT IMPACTS, SMALL
BUSINESSES.2:44
2 minutes, 44 seconds
IT IMPACTS TOURISM.2:46
2 minutes, 46 seconds
A STATE LIKE WISCONSIN IS ALREADY DEALING WITH THE WORST OF THIS DONALD TRUMP PRESIDENCY AND THERE'S NOT MUCH MORE WE CAN TAKE.2:54
2 minutes, 54 seconds
I'M GOING TO Lieutenant Governor, you are running for the nomination for governor.3:01
3 minutes, 1 second
You have run for statewide office multiple times.3:06
3 minutes, 6 seconds
I am wondering What is the mood of the Wisconsin electorate? How has it changed over the years?3:15
3 minutes, 15 seconds
And do you think that the, because the president did, yeah, he beat Vice President Harris in the state, in the 2024 election.3:25
3 minutes, 25 seconds
Do you think the mood in Wisconsin has shifted such that if you win the nominee, if you win the nomination on Tuesday, that3:47
3 minutes, 47 seconds
it reminds me of 2018, when Donald Trump had his first tour as president.3:52
3 minutes, 52 seconds
And people dealt with the devastating impacts of that presidency then.3:56
3 minutes, 56 seconds
And
what people are looking for now is somebody who's going to provide
that immediate relief to one, stand up to Donald Trump when he's causing
harm, but also bring down costs as soon as possible by expanding health
care.4:07
4 minutes, 7 seconds
By
making sure that our small businesses have the resources they need to
weather these storms and by doing We're doing everything we possibly can
to create good-paying, lasting jobs in a state like Wisconsin.4:19
4 minutes, 19 seconds
So we led with our values. We led with our vision. Of course, Donald Trump had done a disservice.4:24
4 minutes, 24 seconds
But
people needed to know who we were as Democrats, and people had to be
confident that we were going to fight to improve quality of life.4:32
4 minutes, 32 seconds
And I've taken on the tough fights before.4:34
4 minutes, 34 seconds
Sometimes you come out on either side of that coin.4:37
4 minutes, 37 seconds
And I'm fortunate that I have had the progress that we made when I was in office standing up to Donald Trump.4:43
4 minutes, 43 seconds
That
people all across Wisconsin know exactly how I will stand up and
continue to fight for them to make things better, to improve our public
schools,4:52
4 minutes, 52 seconds
to
improve our roads PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN SOME BRIDGES AND ULTIMATELY GET
MORE MONEY BACK INTO THE POCKETS OF HARD WORK AND PEOPLE BY HOLDING THE
WEALTHY AND THE5:01
5 minutes, 1 second
THE
BILIONAIRES AND ENSURE THAT ALL OF THE SERVICES THAT HAVE BEEN LACKING
IN A STATE LIKE WISCONSIN WHICH HAS BEEN A CASE ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY.5:09
5 minutes, 9 seconds
WE'RE GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT WE TURN THAT whole broken system upside down and make sure that the same union5:17
5 minutes, 17 seconds
households
like the one that I was born in can be able to put food on the table to
make sure that people can go to a doctor not worry about a surprise
bill.5:24
5 minutes, 24 seconds
That's
what this fight is AND DONALD TRUMP HAS BEEN AGAINST IT EVERY STEP OF
THE WAY ALONG WITH TOM TIFFANY HIS HAND-PICKED CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR OF
WISCONSIN.5:32
5 minutes, 32 seconds
PEOPLE HAVE HAD ENOUGH AND THEY'RE GOING TO SHOW UP TO THE POLLS AND MAKE THOSE CONCERNS VERY loud and clear.5:40
5 minutes, 40 seconds
You know, I believe, I think Eugene mentioned this, that the president very narrowly won Wisconsin in 2024.5:48
5 minutes, 48 seconds
What do you think is the single biggest issue that could turn some of those swing voters?5:56
5 minutes, 56 seconds
It's
hard to say any single issue, but if there was an umbrella, I would
have to say it's the cost of living. It's out of control.6:04
6 minutes, 4 seconds
Cost
of living feels like an issue, you know, for a lot of different
election cycles, but hasn't been as bad as it's been now. People's wages
are not keeping up with inflation.6:13
6 minutes, 13 seconds
People's wages are also not keeping up with greed because there is a level of price gouging involved.6:19
6 minutes, 19 seconds
And
I want to talk about that, too, because with gas prices that are going
up because of the illegal war in Iran, we also see these oil and gas
companies making record profits.6:28
6 minutes, 28 seconds
And that is what we are fighting against. We're fighting against.6:31
6 minutes, 31 seconds
We're
fighting against those monopolies that have made it difficult for our
family farmers to compete and have pushed out small businesses.6:37
6 minutes, 37 seconds
So the one thing that would tip the scales is a continued escalation of costs here in Wisconsin or all across the country.6:46
6 minutes, 46 seconds
But as I mentioned earlier, some of those impacts have already been felt.6:51
6 minutes, 51 seconds
Many of those impacts have already been felt, but some of them are permanent.6:55
6 minutes, 55 seconds
There has been irreversible7:10
7 minutes, 10 seconds
where
he could be helping out people in Wisconsin, but instead doing the
bidding of an out-of-control president who seems to be out of his mind,
cognitively, not there.7:19
7 minutes, 19 seconds
And we are having to deal with that impact and the results. And it's just not fair. It's not fair. People have had enough.7:27
7 minutes, 27 seconds
And it is a shame that this man is actually still president right now.7:32
7 minutes, 32 seconds
Former
Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, whose primary is not
until August 11th. I want to clear up that mistake I made.7:41
7 minutes, 41 seconds
Thank you very much for coming back to the weekend. Thank you so much for having me. Look forward to coming back. All right.MS NOW
