Jacob Soboroff: ICE detained over 500 babies and toddlers under Trump
Jacob Soboroff: ICE detained over 500 babies and toddlers under Trump
MS NOW and The Marshall Project joined forces to conduct an in-depth analysis of immigration records obtained by the Deportation Data Project to determine how many babies and toddlers have been detained by ICE since President Trump returned to office in 2025. The analysis yielded three key findings, including that at least 500 babies and toddlers have been detained by ICE since President Trump returned to office in 2025. The analysis also found that on any given day, ICE has an average of 25 babies and toddlers in custody. MS NOW’s Jacob Soboroff co-authored the report and joins Morning Joe to discuss what they discovered.

LOOKING AT AMERICA'S YOUNGEST DETAINEE, YOUR ANALYSIS FOUND THAT AT LEAST 500 BABIES AND TODDLERS HAVE BEEN DETAINED BY ICE.0:14

THEY ARE SICK SINCE PRESIDENT TRUMP RETURNED TO OFFICE IN 2025.0:19

YOU SPOKE WITH SOME OF THE FAMILIES IMPACTED, WHAT MORE CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT WHAT YOU FOUND AND WHAT YOU HEARD FROM YOU KNOW,0:27

YOU
GUYS, I AM ACTUALLY EXTREMELY GLAD THAT THE PRESIDENT IS TUNED IN THIS
MORNING BECAUSE THIS IS AN EXTENSION OF A POLICY THAT DURING THE FIRST
TERM,0:35

PHYSICIANS
FOR HUMAN RIGHTS SAID WAS TORTURE, ACCORDING TO THE UNITED I'M TALKING
ABOUT FAMILY SEPARATION, GOVERNMENT SANCTIONED CHILD ABUSE ACCORDING TO
THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS.0:45
45 seconds
AND WITH OUR REPORTING PARTNERS AT THE MARSHALL PROJECT, THIS IS THE FIRST OF ITS KIND WE HAVE ANALYZED DATA FROM THE0:55
55 seconds
DEPORTATION DATA PROJECT THAT SHOWS 500, AS YOU SAID, LITTLE KIDS, BABIES AND TODDLERS HAVE BEEN DETAINED1:02
1 minute, 2 seconds
BY ICE SINCE THE BEGINNING OF JUST TRUMP 2 .0, AND THAT IS ONLY THROUGH MARCH OF THIS YEAR. WE DON'T HAVE DATA AFTER MARCH.1:09
1 minute, 9 seconds
BUT THIS WILL BE LIFELONG CONSEQUENCES FOR THESE LITTLE KIDS INSIDE A THAT IS A FAMILY PRISON IN THE UNITED STATES.1:17
1 minute, 17 seconds
LET ME SAY THAT ONE MORE TIME.1:18
1 minute, 18 seconds
A
FAMILY PRISON IN THE UNITED A PRISON FOR FAMILIES, THE DILLY DETENTION
CENTER IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA THAT THAT WAS CLOSED UNDER
PRESIDENT1:25
1 minute, 25 seconds
TRUMP'S PREDECESSOR, PRESIDENT BIDEN, AND REOPENED BY PRESIDENT TRUMP ONLY FOR THE REASON1:31
1 minute, 31 seconds
DETAINING
FAMILIES WITH LITTLE KIDS INSIDE OF THEM, AND WE KNOW THAT ANY CHILD
WHO IS DETAINED IN A SITUATION LIKE THIS WILL HAVE SOME KIND OF LIFELONG
TRAUMA.1:41
1 minute, 41 seconds
THERE
ARE FAMILIES IN HERE WHO HAVE BEEN IN THERE NOT JUST THE 20 DAYS THAT
IS ALLOWED UNDER THE LAW IN THE UNITED STATES, BUT FOR 118 DAYS IN ONE
CASE.1:51
1 minute, 51 seconds
AND THIS IS THE CASE I WANT TO TALK TO YOU GUYS ABOUT. ALSU, AZAT, AND AMIR, A A LITTLE ONE-YEAR-OLD BOY.1:59
1 minute, 59 seconds
THIS IS A FAMILY FROM RUSSIA THAT FLED RUSSIA BECAUSE THEY OPPOSED THE WAR IN UKRAINE.2:04
2 minutes, 4 seconds
THEY LEFT RUSSIA BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT THEY WOULD BE THROWN INTO A PRISON THERE FOR THEIR CHILDREN, THEY WANTED TO TURN IN THIS 2:12
2 minutes, 12 seconds
PRISON AND LOCKED UP IN CONDITIONS THAT NO PARENT COULD EVER IMAGINE THEIR CHILD IN.2:19
2 minutes, 19 seconds
AND I WANT TO SHOW YOU A LITTLE BIT OF OUR REPORT, GUYS. WATCH THIS.2:23
2 minutes, 23 seconds
YOU
LEFT RUSSIA BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T WANT TO GO TO PRISON, YET YOU GET TO THE
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND YOU END UP IN A PLACE THAT TO YOU FEELS
LIKE A prison, what was that like for you?2:32
2 minutes, 32 seconds
We came here to escape prison. We wanted to be free.2:37
2 minutes, 37 seconds
But once we arrived in America, we spent four months in detention four months in detention 118 days to be exact2:47
2 minutes, 47 seconds
gotcha it's crazy to hold your son like this and look at this beautiful child in the the face and think that for 118 days,2:56
2 minutes, 56 seconds
the three of you were locked up in a prison for families in the United States. I cannot imagine what it was like for you.3:04
3 minutes, 4 seconds
It was very hard not knowing when they would let us go, where we would go or if they were going to deport us.3:12
3 minutes, 12 seconds
On any given day, you guys, ICE has an average of 25 babies and toddlers under the age of three in custody.3:19
3 minutes, 19 seconds
That is what this analysis by the Marshall Project and MSNOW found.3:22
3 minutes, 22 seconds
There
was not a single day without at least one baby or toddler in detention
for March of 2025 through the most recent date that we saw in our
analysis.3:31
3 minutes, 31 seconds
And
again, if the president is watching, what I THINK THAT'S WHAT PEOPLE
WHO ADVOCATE ON BEHALF OF THESE BABIES AND CHILDREN WANT IS TO CLOSE
THIS FACILITY,3:38
3 minutes, 38 seconds
DILLY, THE DETENTION CENTER IN TEXAS, THAT THE ALLEGATIONS OF THE FAMILY-FRIENDLY FACILITY.3:42
3 minutes, 42 seconds
THE
FAMILY-FRIENDLY FACILITY IS A FAMILY-FRIENDLY FACILITY. ICE SAYS THIS
IS A FAMILY-FRIENDLY FACILITY. DHS SAYS THIS IS A FAMILY-FRIENDLY
FACILITY.3:48
3 minutes, 48 seconds
AND
CORE CIVIC, WHO BY THE WAY IS MAKING A PROFIT OFF THE FACILITY SAYS
THIS IS A FAMILY-FRIENDLY FACILITY AND THE CONDITIONS ARE DECENT.3:59
3 minutes, 59 seconds
IT
TAKES SOME AUDACITY TO CALL FAMILY-FRIENDLY A PLACE where you're
detaining one and two year olds can you speak jacob to why the parents
even were being detained4:08
4 minutes, 8 seconds
in
the first place because that's an important part of the story in most
of the cases in your reporting here people who either presented
themselves at legal ports of entry4:16
4 minutes, 16 seconds
or went to an appointment where they thought they were safe and doing the right thing and were detained along with their babies.4:23
4 minutes, 23 seconds
Yeah, the idea that an asylum a political asylum seeker would be locked up, at all, once they pass their credible4:30
4 minutes, 30 seconds
fear screening at the border is different from how things used to be.4:35
4 minutes, 35 seconds
And
all of these families that are inside of here in one way or another,
these are not violent criminals, these are certainly not the worst of
the worst.4:43
4 minutes, 43 seconds
They
would be in prisons or they would be separated actually from their
children and locked up the parents in a separate ICE facility.4:49
4 minutes, 49 seconds
These are people who just have immigration violations.4:52
4 minutes, 52 seconds
And we're talking about when Joaquin Castro went there, the congressman from the San Antonio area.4:57
4 minutes, 57 seconds
Early on during this administration there were over a thousand people inside this facility.5:02
5 minutes, 2 seconds
That
number has steadily gone down because of efforts by him and we're going
to have this full report that it airs on my show this weekend, so
almost 20 minutes that shows how hard they've been working to get people
out of there.5:12
5 minutes, 12 seconds
But the answer is no good reason other than they have immigration violations.5:16
5 minutes, 16 seconds
They came here as undocumented people seeking political asylum and the president wants to lock them up with their babies.5:24
5 minutes, 24 seconds
Yeah, let's bring into the conversation.5:26
5 minutes, 26 seconds
Opinion columnist for The New York Times, David French, Adrienne Elride and Claire McCaskill is here with us as well.5:31
5 minutes, 31 seconds
David, again, we've been talking about the I THINK IT'S A HYPOCRACY OF CHRISTIAN NATIONALISTS FOR QUITE SOME TIME.5:37
5 minutes, 37 seconds
ANYBODY THAT SUPPORTS THIS POLICY CLAIMS TO BE A CHRISTIAN IS JUST, AGAIN, I DON'T KNOW WHERE THEY HAVE5:44
5 minutes, 44 seconds
BEEN WHILE THE PREACHER HAS BEEN PREACHING ABOUT WHAT JESUS SAID. LET THE LITTLE CHILDREN COME.5:50
5 minutes, 50 seconds
ANYONE
THAT DOES HARM TO HE WAS EVER BORN, THAT'S WORD IS A LITTLE ONE, BETTER
THAN A MILLSTONE BE HUNG AROUND HIS NECK AND SUNK TO5:59
5 minutes, 59 seconds
THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA THAN HE WAS EVER BORN, THAT'S JESUS' WORDS.6:03
6 minutes, 3 seconds
AGAIN, SO OBVIOUSLY JESUS MAKING A GREAT POINT THAT YOU GO OUT OF YOUR WAY TO PROTECT CHILDREN.6:12
6 minutes, 12 seconds
AND BY THE WAY, PEOPLE who claim to be pro-life? Oh, we're far babies when they're unborn.6:21
6 minutes, 21 seconds
But after they're born, they can be locked up in internment camps and just the war.6:27
6 minutes, 27 seconds
It's REALLY, I MEAN, IT'S JUST, EVEN BY HYPOCRITICAL STANDARDS OF PEOPLE6:35
6 minutes, 35 seconds
WHO
CALL THEMSELVES EVANGELICALS SUPPORTING THIS SORT OF STUFF, EVEN THIS
IS SHOCKING TO IMMIGRATION VIOLATIONS, THIS IS NOT A SITUATION 6:43
6 minutes, 43 seconds
WHERE
YOU HAVE WHAT REALLY COMPOUNDS IT, I THINK WHAT'S IMPORTANT ABOUT THE
REPORT IS THAT HE WAS TALKING THAT THESE FAMILIES ARE GUILTY ONLY OF
IMMIGRATION VIOLATIONS,6:53
6 minutes, 53 seconds
THIS
IS NOT A SITUATION WHERE YOU HAVE VIOLENT OF CRIMINALS AND CHILDREN,
BECAUSE AS WAS STATED IN THAT CIRCUMSTANCE YOU WOULD HAVE SEPARATION,7:00
7 minutes
SO YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE WHO ARE GUILTY OF, YOU KNOW, ILLEGAL ENTRY IS A MISDEMEANOR,7:07
7 minutes, 7 seconds
A VISA to overstay isn't a crime at all and so you've got people who are guilty if they're guilty at all of a crime of something7:15
7 minutes, 15 seconds
in a misdemeanor level leading to family detention for extended I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE7:22
7 minutes, 22 seconds
AREN'T UNDERSTAND HOW DRACONIENT AND HOW PUNITIVE THE TRUMP CRACKDOWN IS.7:30
7 minutes, 30 seconds
AND
THAT'S WHAT IT IS, AND THEN WHEN YOU DO POINT IT OUT, THEY RAISED THE
RED HERRING, THE STRAW MAN OF, OH, WELL, YOU MUST BE FOR OPEN BORDERS,7:38
7 minutes, 38 seconds
THAT THE ALTERNATIVE TO THIS PROGRAM is nothing but unrestrained immigration when that is absolutely not true at all.7:46
7 minutes, 46 seconds
Jacob, I'm curious what's going on inside DHS with Mark Wayne Mullen and Holman kind7:53
7 minutes, 53 seconds
of taking over from some of the craziest folks that were running the place it feels8:00
8 minutes
like
to me the Stephen Miller is still pulling the levers and figuring out
ways to find anybody who is not of white European descent to get them
out of the country.8:12
8 minutes, 12 seconds
What
is going on now with the folks in charge comparing to what was going on
when they were murdering people in the streets of Minneapolis?8:20
8 minutes, 20 seconds
There is no doubt about it that nothing has changed, Claire.8:24
8 minutes, 24 seconds
Just
because Greg Bovino is not running around the country in his military
costume throwing flashbang grenades and smoke canisters8:31
8 minutes, 31 seconds
at
protesters killing both migrants and American citizens alike with the
operations all around the country, including Renee Nicole Goode and
Alex Preddy.8:41
8 minutes, 41 seconds
The underlying policy is still the same.8:44
8 minutes, 44 seconds
Mass deportation is family separation by another name.8:47
8 minutes, 47 seconds
We knew it when Donald Trump accepted with balloons falling from the ceiling at the Republican convention.8:52
8 minutes, 52 seconds
The nomination with those signs that said mass deportation now, this is always what they have said they were going to do.8:58
8 minutes, 58 seconds
And just because Tom Homan stands behind the podium of DHS or Mark Wayne Mullin in a suit and not the outfit,9:06
9 minutes, 6 seconds
the fatigues that Greg Bovino was in, nothing has changed about the policy.9:11
9 minutes, 11 seconds
Stephen IN THE FIRST TERM, BUT 25 ,000 USING A PRACTICE KNOWN AS ADMINISTRATIVE SEPARATIONS.9:21
9 minutes, 21 seconds
NOW
THROUGH THE INTERIOR REPORTING FROM THE The Brookings Institution says
that they have separated over 100 ,000 families potentially from their
parents inside of this country.9:31
9 minutes, 31 seconds
And it doesn't happen at the border anymore.
