Republicans cry fraud in Los Angeles because they’re sore losers

Congressional Cowards is a weekly series highlighting the worst Donald Trump defenders on Capitol Hill, who refuse to criticize him—no matter how disgraceful or lawless his actions.

Republicans lost the Los Angeles mayoral election this week when their MAGA-aligned, D-List reality TV personality Spencer Pratt failed to advance to the general election—a predictable outcome in a city that hasn’t had a GOP mayor in more than 25 years.

But because Republicans believe that any election they lose is the product of a conspiracy rather than voters simply not liking them, they’ve followed in the footsteps of President Donald Trump: spreading lies about voter fraud.

“Some of these efforts are so diabolical and so far upstream, it’s impossible to prove. But I think everybody knows instinctively that something is wrong here,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said Monday.

By that logic, would Democrats be justified in saying that the 2024 election was rigged because “instinctively” it just felt “wrong” that anyone would vote for a corrupt, self-dealing idiot?

Johnson wasn’t the only Republican to make idiotic and dangerous allegations of fraud in response to Pratt’s loss.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise also alleged that the California election was “rigged” because of “wide changes after election night in the results.” When he was told that the election results changed simply because votes were being counted, Scalise refused to accept reality and continued to push lies.

Spencer Pratt speaks during an appearance on "Fox & Friends" at Fox News headquarters, Jan. 28, 2026, in New York.

“Whether you can prove fraud or not, it does undermine voter integrity in the vote,” Scalise said.

Meanwhile, GOP Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida, who is running for governor, spread fraud lies to try to boost support for the SAVE Act—a voter suppression bill that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote, which, ironically, would likely make it harder for Republicans to vote.

“Blue states can and will undermine elections in real time,” Donalds wrote on X. “This is why we need the SAVE America Act—now more than ever.”

But it wasn’t just House Republicans who pushed the lies. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas also got in on the baseless fraud allegations.

“Apparently in California, vote counting keeps going until I guess [Democrats] get the result they want. It is messed up,” Cruz said on his podcast.

Similarly, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah said that the results were proof that the GOP-controlled Congress needs to pass his SAVE Act.

“In light of the stunningly improbable LA mayoral election results, the Senate should turn immediately to the SAVE America Act. And keep debating it until it passes. Literally nothing is more important,” Lee wrote on X.

Sen. Rick Scott of Florida took it a step further, sending a letter to the Department of Justice urging an investigation into the fraud allegations.

“Americans expect and deserve elections that are free, fair, transparent, and efficient. California clearly does not want to meet those standards,” Scott told The California Post, an offshoot of the right-wing New York Post.

He continued, “Between troubling reports of fraudulent ballots being submitted, people paying homeless people to cast ballots, and delays in ballot counting, everyone paying attention is troubled by the process. The American people deserve answers.”

Democrats condemned the baseless allegations of fraud.

“The anomaly in the LA Mayor’s race is that Republican MAGA Pratt even got to 2nd place on election night. The LA Times poll had Pratt in 3rd place. Dems massively outnumber Republicans by nearly 4 to 1 in LA,” Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California wrote on X. “Pratt was predicted to lose and he lost. That’s not fraud, it’s math.”

But Republicans know that they can rile up their base of rubes by making false and absurd allegations of fraud—which is why they aren’t going to stop.

In fact, their lies about California are likely just a precursor of what’s to come in the midterms, when Republicans will almost certainly be crushed due to Trump’s unpopularity—a narrative that malignant narcissist Trump will refuse to accept.

“It’s pretty clear to all of us that Republicans are laying the groundwork to do anything to hold power,” Democratic Rep. Pete Aguilar of California said. “That’s what this is about.”

Seems like states should not release any results until all legally cast ballots are counted. And if that takes two weeks, then we won't have results for two weeks. Take away the incomplete data and there is no confirmation of any particular narrative.

'By that logic, would Democrats be justified in saying that the 2024 election was rigged because “instinctively” it just felt “wrong” that anyone would vote for a corrupt, self-dealing idiot?'

This is much, much easier to conceive of, based on polls and voting patterns rather than just wish-to-believe, than the idea that a city that is both solidly blue AND that has immediate, intense reason to despise and fear the GOP would suddenly change three decades worth of political leanings.

At this point, I don't think Republicans are drinking the Kool-Aid, so much as swilling cyanide-Everclear cocktails and claiming they cure cancer.

  3. Comment by Notpaidtopost.

I'm really thinking we need to make it a crime, a criminal offense, to insist on more than one ballot recount. That's all that Bush vs Gore got.

Trump lies and lies and his toxicity is spreading.

We know elections are not fraudulent.

Something has got to change. To make Americans distrust the voting process....is a reprehensible and criminal act.

  4. Comment by Stevoreno.

Yes, sore losers who lie, cheat, and falsely accuse because it’s a strategy that has sometimes worked for them. I’m hoping these snowflakes reach the “Boy Who Cried Wolf” stage fairly soon when no one believes them anymore about anything. Wouldn’t that be nice.

Rick Scott is another criminal self enriching GOP who DESERVES PRISON

    LOCK HIM UP

  6. Comment by Digler.

Pretty obvious that the 2026 playbook is to contest even obvious honest losses by the regime know as Trump. I think that by whatever means this needs to be shouted from the rooftops and show the fraudsters for what they are.

I honestly do not know this turd that was kind right win host or contestant...I guess local to LA. But they will lie and lie and ...ok you got it lie to stay in the phony baloney crooked ponzi scheme government power.

Snarkapuss spews speculative superior salivating sensational sensationalistic shite: Below.

For all of those who "care" about "fair elections", and all who are actually "paying attention", the leftist liberal Demoncrats are, knowingly, obviously, clearly, undoubtedly, diabolically, willfully, secretively, and openly rigging not just their local and state elections, but also national elections for the Presidency.

    Yup. All that is obvious.

"Real Americans", code for MAGA cultists, know that there is "secret" rigging.

That "secrete" is proven because it's "obvious", as anyone, who is actually "paying attention", can "See' all of that "secret" rigging and false counting.

    Riiiight.

It's all such a secret and hidden that it's obvious and clear to anyone who is actually and simply "paying attention".

That's how secretes and conspiracies are proven to be true.

Secrets, conspiracies and all things purposefully "hidden", are revealed to be true when a lot of people just claim that it is true.

It is all true because those same people say so, and for evidence they just say they have "seen" the evidence. Well, that's real tangible proof indeed.

If you say you see it, saw it, and it's real, then hell yes, you must be telling the truth and it's all true, true, true.

You know, that secret, hidden, evidence that no one can find nor see?

Well, the true believer can easily see it, because the true believer's belief is so strong that the "hidden truth", "secrets", and "read evidence", come into existence when the true believer believes it so deeply.

Ghosts, Big Foot, aliens, the Reptilians, they only reveal themselves to actual and true believers.

If you're not a real and genuine believer, then of course you can't, and never will be able to see those ghosts, Big Foot, the Reptilians, the fountain of youth, nor the ancient pyramid's glowing aura proving that pyramids are actual infinite power sources.

    You gotta really believe.

No, no, I man really, really, really believe, and only then will what you so strongly believe reveal itself to be true and real.

You see, the liberal leftist Democrats are so into the "deep state" that they rigged the 2016 election. But, since the liberal left Democrats are also so ineffective and dump, their 2016 rigging failed as Trump won that election.

Then, when Trump was in power from 2016 up to and including the 2020 election, the Democrats were in such control of the "deep state" that they were able to rig that election, such that in EVERY state the voting machines changed the people's votes from "Trump" to "Biden".

You see, even thought Trump was the President, Congress was still controlled by the left House majority, and the ultra slim Senate majority. That's who "they" did it, while Trump was President during that whole time before the 2020 election.

And so, Biden "won" the election.

But...if that were true, then how did Biden/Harris and the Democrats lose the 2024 election, as he and "they" were in power in the Presidency with a lot of power in Congress?

If the 2020 election was rigged by the Democrats, when the President was Trump, not a democrat, and the Dems are that good at rigging elections, because they've been doing it for decades, then how did they fail to rig the election so that Harris would win, and the House and Senate would be a Dem majority?

The election results showed that Trump won, and the MAGA Republicans had majorities in the House and Senate.

So, did the Dems rig the election so that they were not in power and would lose any power they had, in order to get Trump as President, and to have right wing majority power in the House, Senate, and Supreme Court?

If the Dems rig and control every state run election, then their rigging favors the right wing party.

So then, why would you want to stop that kind of election control and rigging when it results in MAGA Republicans winning?

Well, it's all so clear if you only believe and believe so clearly and strongly.

And when you do that, then those beliefs become real realities that you can clearly see, if only you are really and truly, "paying attention".

Republiscum still have a base of Rubs? Where are they? They've all scampered away around here. Signs all gone, bumper stickers spray painted over. But because truthfully any election republiscum win is the product of theft and cheating.

  9. Comment by Bring the Lions.

One thing is clear and should be addressed by this time-

Insofar as Trump, MAGA, and the GOP goes, Democrats can not legitimately out-vote Republicans.

To be clearer, Democratic VOTERS can't out-vote Republican voters.

To be even clearer, white Christian Republican voters can not be out-voted by non-white, secular, liberal Democratic voters.....EVEN IF THEY ARE.

That's the "fraud." A stupid cult full of scared white/Christian folks looking to their daddy (Trump) to stop the "fraud" of the GOP losing elections to Democrats. That's all it's ever been.

Jamelle Bouie lays it out in this video essay-

I beg you, update the words you use regarding the Republicans in elected Office in the US Congress.

Cowards? Maybe, but that's the wrong appellation for these people.

Call them what they are #Quislings #QuislingRepublicans

It is aided in its unceasing efforts to gain more power and undermine our institutions and rights by a Congress in which quislings claim a majority.

Will somebody please tell Mike Johnson that I am part of "everybody" and I am sick and tired of him thinking that he knows what I think? No, Mike "everybody" doesn't think instinctively that something is wrong. Many of us understand how ballots get counted, and we know that sometimes incomplete vote counts can be different than the final totals.

When are reporters going to point out that "everybody knows" is wishful thinking, faulty logic, and deliberately misleading?

    • Reply by Judge Moonbox.

In the context of Republican rhetoric, "everybody" only refers to the people who agree with them. In Johnson's opinion, the 81 million Biden voters in 2020 are un-American nonpersons.

  11. Comment by CaptainDunsel.

All this does is rile up the base, but they can't create new MAGA voters, and so far voting harder isn't a thing. They haven't got the numbers. If they've got their undies in a bunch about this, wait until Steve Hilton goes down in a blaze of stupidity in November.

Apparently 200,000 of my LA neighbors voted for the Prat. And why? Because he's a Republican and he had Trump's hollow endorsement. The only reason(s) they needed. They hate our city because every one of its problems is due to "Democrat" malfeasance or ineptitude. The majority of us (overwhelmingly) know its problems are deeply systemic and the mayor's job is both difficult and thankless. And I suspect a great number of us wondered if the Prat's failure to properly insure his home might have had more to do with him being forced to take refuge in the Hotel Bel Air than Mayor Bass' ill-timed trip to Africa. He did say if he lost either the primary or the general that he was leaving LA for good so we do have that to be thankful for.

    • Reply by Bolino.

Was Pratt's percentage of the vote about the same, as the leading Republican candidate in the previous LA mayor election?

    • Reply by Bring the Lions.

The national punditry is getting this wrong- "Oh wow, a Republican got a notable share of the vote! This means trouble for Democrats."

The vast majority of people in L.A. have little to no idea how the city works. They don't know the mayor's office has always been PURPOSELY less powerful than other large cities. Also, other large cities generally don't have completely separate cities scattered throughout them, with their own mayors and police departments (I live in one of them).

Trump got 32% of the vote in L.A. County and less than that in the city of Los Angeles. That doesn't mean there aren't enough dopes to vote for Pratt for him to make a "showing", but there's no there there. Just a fistful of L.A. Republicans and a smattering of angry and stupid people. Fortunately L.A. has less of them than most places.

    • Reply by Digler.

Bring....Thanks for the ground truth. I'll boldly just advance my opinion that republicans in general (including in this LA election) just like bullies who talk trash but have no ideas to make anything better. Just insults, threats, and lies. Those people exist in droves. They aren't anywhere near the majority in LA, Chicago, NYC, etc but they want to sow that threat in the Democratic voter which is their secret weapon against government for all the people. And boy does the main stream press know it too and use it to stay in business.

  13. Comment by AdmiralNaismith.

Really, we need to do more like this.

Raise the roof and cry FRAUD all over the airwaves if the Republicans somehow manage to steal US Senate races in solid, solid blue Wyoming and Idaho. NO WAY can Repubes win there! Cheaters! Investigate the living shit out of them!

  14. Comment by juliethotel.

I think the Rs play the 'cry-foul' game because they want to sow instability and uncertainty in our electoral process. They can't win by fair rules and open debate of legit issues, so they make a lot of noise over pseudo scandals. Trump and election integrity are oxymorons.

  15. Comment by Pool House Doctor.

So when are we going to get the SAVE America From Republicans Act?

    Can't come soon enough.
