President Donald Trump is apparently not satisfied with his renaming of the Gulf of Mexico.

On Tuesday, Trump angrily suggested that Lake Ontario be renamed “Lake America” as he was mocked by U.S. and Canadian lawmakers for another round of unproductive tariffs levied against Canada.

“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

He also posted an edited map of Lake Ontario with “Lake America” branding. 

Trump’s latest outburst was prompted by a failed tariff “deal” between the U.S. and Canada over tariffs. After lengthy negotiations, Trump announced that a new slate of tariffs would be levied against Canada. 

But to Trump’s dismay, he failed to intimidate Canada.

Prime Minister Mark Carney slammed the proposed terms of the agreement as “uneconomic, unfair, and undermined the net benefits for Canada.” He said that Trump’s new tariffs were a “miscalculation” and that Canada would suspend trade negotiations.

Premier of Ontario Doug Ford said that his province would back Carney and that retaliatory measures would be investigated to “leverage every bit of pain we possibly can on Americans.” 

One possibility would be to withhold power exports, which are used by states along the northern border, like Michigan.

After Trump’s “Lake America” posts, Ford derided it as “a lot of rhetoric.”

Even more pointed criticism came from Democratic Rep. Debbie Dingell of Michigan, who took the opportunity to take a dig at Trump’s ongoing controversy with his aide Natalie Harp.

“Let’s just call it Lake Natalie so we know you’ll start protecting our Great Lakes,” she wrote on Bluesky.

Trump’s embarrassing episode is just his latest tariff-related fumble since retaking the Oval Office. He has long touted tariffs as an economic cure-all, but his decision to levy them against a slate of countries has led to increased prices for U.S. families with few economic concessions from other nations. 

The Supreme Court’s conservative majority even ruled that Trump had overstepped his power with some of the tariffs, which are still causing harm to the U.S. economy, undoing the recovery he inherited from former President Joe Biden. 

Still, Trump won’t budge on his tariffs. But at least it’s uniting Canadians and Americans against him.

    American tariffs are nothing but an unjust tax on the American people and something to piss off the US's former allies even more.

    Trump is nothing but a spasmodic social spore, spreading his toxins to the US and the world. He's a petulant man-baby that has no clue how to head a business or a nation.

    He belongs in a prison's psychiatric ward, not in any position of power. He made America the laughingstock of the world.

    Since Canada supplies over 61% of our oil, perhaps we should start referring to the warmer climes as the "bicycle states" and stock up on blankets for this coming winter.

    And we should find out who the idiot was who negotiated the last trade deal with Canada that Cheeto Caligula claims we're getting screwed by... oooh, right, it *was* an idiot. A large orange one. There's no bigger loser fool on planet earth.

      Objectively, the US screwed Canada and the US with NAFTA, and there's no way America will get such a sweetheart deal again. Trump fucked that up just like how he fucked up President Obama's successful treaty that suppressed and controlled Iran's nuclear ambitions

    The bad news is that Canada will suffer more from a trade war than the US (over 70% of Canadian exports go to the US). The good news is that Trump has badly fumbled this on both on the economics and on the politics.

    Carney is popular and will be able to weather the storm. His minister of industry today also announced grants and interest free loans for small businesses to help weather the storm (the loans don’t need to be paid back for 36 months by which time Trump will be gone). The Canadian government is also going all in on the Buy Canada message as a patriotic way to help save Canadian workers and businesses.

    Trump on the other hand is not popular, and his tariffs are also unpopular. His idiocy may well help tip the balance Ohio, Maine and Michigan senate races over to the Democrats (all three states are major exporters to Canada).

    It’s also possible that Trump will TACO any day now a deal will end up going through in the end.

      It is convincing Canadians that we are the enemy and they will tolerate discomfort if they feel Carney is fighting back. And he is. He appears to be a strong leader while Trump is the anti-Christ. That will make all the difference.

      Except.... A massive, outsized portion of what Canada sells the US is energy or natural resources, for which there are few economic alternatives (electricity, oil, potash, uranium, nickel, even aluminum and softwood lumber). In these cases, US consumption will hardly change as demand is inelastic. On the balance, for services and finished/manufactured agoods, the US runs a small trade SURPLUS with Canada. Practically, that means a tit for tat trade war is equally bad for both countries, as offsetting retaliatory tarrifs will push people to buying alternatives. It's products like appliances and autos that will hurt. Sadly, many businesses will be hardly affected, while some will be devastated.

      Lumber, cement, and aluminium. Note that a lot of 'wood frame' construction these days uses aluminium stud framing. So there are your three most basic building materials for residential construction and a decent amount of commercial construction as well.

      He's fighting back and he knows that's what we want. It's a pity Americans don't fight back - like at all. It would certainly help. It's like Michael Moore said, Americans are afraid of their shadows. Sorry but your government is actually literally trying to destroy our economy and our country. Canadians can take some pain and we will. We don't bother anybody but if you mess with us we will fight back and we will NEVER forget who did this to us.
