Donald Trump made a stunning confession as part of a Truth Social onslaught after storms hit the nation’s 250th birthday celebrations.

The 80-year-old president shared over 100 posts from 11 a.m to 11 p.m Sunday with his almost 13 million Truth Social followers. They included a weird meme attacking Italy’s female prime minister, a post praising England’s World Cup captain Harry Kane, and a doctored image of Barack and Michelle Obama on the steps of Air Force One that prompted accusations of racism.

But a single sentence in one of the posts raised eyebrows after he boasted that he personally ignored expert advice to make sure his “Salute to America” was not derailed by potentially lethal extreme weather. In the post, Trump admitted he “overturned” a recommendation to cancel the evening’s festivities despite fears that going ahead could put people’s lives at risk.

The Sunday post began with Trump claiming—without producing any evidence—that over 400,000 people had initially gathered to hear him before the severe storms hit, after a day of triple-digit heat.

He then noted that thousands of attendees were evacuated from the area, roughly three hours before his speech was scheduled to begin.

“The Crowd at 7:05 in the evening was 422,000 people! All were forced to leave because of the weather, the event was cancelled, and everyone was gone because of lightning,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“Incredibly, at least 150,000 people returned,” he said, adding, “it was an even more spectacular evening than it would have been as normalized! It showed work under pressure.”

Trump then admitted: “When I heard that it was cancelled, I immediately overturned that decision, and waited a while for people to come back.”

The Daily Beast has contacted the White House and Freedom 250 for comment on Trump’s claim.

A senior White House official told the Washington Post on Sunday that “all the entities involved” had recommended canceling Saturday’s event, including Trump’s speech and the fireworks display, after the storms had led to the forced exodus from the National Mall.

“When POTUS heard this, he told all involved to invite everyone back in and the speech would take place, even if it meant waiting until 2 a.m.,” the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations, told the Post.

The National Park Service first issued a weather evacuation alert around 7:15 p.m on Saturday. About 20 minutes later, Freedom 250 organizers escalated the alert, announcing that “severe storms” were approaching, stating, “The safety of our guests, performers, and staff is our top priority.” The warning came as thunderstorms could be heard nearby.

Freedom 250 then advised people to evacuate the event and “seek temporary shelter.” Tens of thousands were evacuated from the site, with some taking shelter in federal buildings.

Trump eventually arrived at the National Mall with first lady Melania at 10:09 p.m. as attendees were still going through TSA-style security checks to re-enter the area. He eventually took the stage around 11:15 p.m. after a 90-minute delay and spoke for approximately 40 minutes.

“I said, if we have to speak in front of one person at 4 o’clock in the morning, I’m going to be here. There’s no way we can be deterred,” he told the soaked crowd.

A Washington official involved in the organization of Saturday’s event told the Post the District had no direct knowledge of conversations that may have occurred between the event’s organizers and the White House about a potential cancellation on Saturday.

The National Mall activities for July 4 were designated as a National Special Security Event due to Trump’s desire to speak at the event, which he did behind bulletproof glass. The classification is usually reserved for presidential inaugurations or visits from foreign dignitaries.

Trump was talking down the weather threat when posting to Truth Social in real time on Saturday.

“Storms bring luck to whatever the occasion. They also make events a little bit more exciting! We will wait it out.... It’s Saturday night, LETS HAVE SOME FUN, even if we are out late tonight,” he posted just after 9 p.m.

“Our great veterans, especially the old timers, many of whom are there, went through hellfire, and it didn’t stop them. It’s not going to stop us either! I’m not going to let some rain stop our 250th,” he wrote.

The opening of the Great American State Fair was postponed by two hours on Saturday after the soaring temperatures.

The evening ended with a 40-minute fireworks display around midnight, three hours later than it had been in previous years, leading to chaos for those trying to get home.

Trump later declared that his team had produced “the Most Spectacular Fireworks Show I have ever seen, and I’ve seen them all.”

Here’s how you can help Daily Kos get out the vote

We just celebrated the 250th anniversary of the United States. Like many, I’m sure, I took the time to hang out with my family, eat some BBQ, and watch some fireworks. Typical, but a welcome distraction.

Now I’m back to work. Daily Kos not only provides the opportunity to spark and enact change, but to also reflect on what’s next for the betterment of our democracy. It allows me to think every day about how we protect and strengthen our democracy. And the answer that immediately came to me was “the midterm elections.”

But that still felt too big—too abstract—against the backdrop of unaccountable authoritarians ripping apart everything that makes this country so great.

So instead I’m looking for the catalyst. So much feels out of our control, but it’s not. In fact, it’s ours to ignite—and that’s what this Fourth of July has been about for me.

The 250th anniversary of the United States is not just a reflection of where the country has been, but also an indication of what kind of place it can become—a reminder that WE get to decide what comes next.

Our country can survive another 250 years with the practice and defense of our democracy. It is ours to do just that—and yes, that starts with the midterms this November.

Civic engagement and participation are our fundamental right and responsibility. We can’t get sleepy. We can’t allow their flood of hate, war, and destruction to cause us to give up. That’s just what they want!

Fuck them. Let’s take it all back. Let’s organize. Let’s outwork them. Let’s win.

That’s why I’m excited to share Daily Kos’ new Get Out the Vote hub, where you can find meaningful ways to help elect Democrats this November.

Whether you have five minutes or five hours, whether you want to volunteer in your community or from your couch, there are many opportunities to make a real difference.

Democratic turnout = Republican burnout.

If we’re serious about honoring the first 250 years of this country, let’s help shape the next 250. It starts with us, and it starts today.

Please join me. Sign up to get out the vote and celebrate our country—not our government—for what it is: OURS!

We'll get straight to the point: The financial hardships that Daily Kos is facing this year are tough.

We continue to be paywall-free. We continue to be supported by our readers, not billionaires or corporations. But we need to bring in more revenue. We are leaning on our community more than ever to help make ends meet.

Myself and another Kossack participated in this site's effort in 2014, and we phone-banked in support of Gary Peters in Michigan during his first run for Senator...in conjunction with Move On from here in Seattle.

I became a Democratic Precinct Committee Officer in January of 2006, it was my New Years resolution in reaction to Dubya's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan...boy, those were simple days!

I used to talk politics weekly with my mother, a raging liberal, but she had passed away at the beginning of 2005. Most of the people I worked with over the years were not into politics, or were RWNJs. My wife was never a political person either (until Bernie Sanders ran in 2015, now she's an MSNOW addict).

I needed an outlet, and so I made an account here on Daily Kos in the Spring of 2005, I think this site prompted me to volunteer to be appointed PCO. It's an elected position on the Primary ballot every 2 years, and I've run for reelection every even-numbered year since.

We are required at a minimum to walk our precincts before every year before each election, Primary and General. But many of us walk, and phone-bank beyond that for GOTV, and for specific candidates and initiatives.

I became the Outreach and Visibility Chair for my Legislative District Democratic organization, and held other offices within that...I've spent 16 years on the Executive Board for our organization. I personally know my electeds (or have at least met) across the spectrum...from both US Senators, State Representatives, down to City Councilmembers for several cities.

What started out as an outlet to discuss and to get to know other progressives has ended up as a way to get to know fellow progressives and to help elect Democrats...it's really filled a void in my life...so get out there, it's fun!

VoteRiders is an organization helping to ensure people have the correct ID they will need to vote at the polls in November. I joined them recently and have been participating in their text-banking and letter-writing campaigns targeting voters who may need this type of assistance. I've volunteered in the past with GOTV efforts and enjoy it a lot. I took some time yesterday, on the 4th, to send out some voter letters, and it felt like an appropriate way to celebrate America's 250th. We can't afford for people not to vote.

It's great that Daily Kos is getting behind GOTV institutionally, but strange that the most effective means of getting the vote out isn't even a choice on the new Hub. Conversations with voters and prospective voters face to face is the most effective tactic of all to engage people and get their votes in. It turns out to be fun and fulfilling, especially to do it with friends. Talking with voters on the phone is next best, and for those in reliably blue areas, maybe the only option to reach people in swing districts. But if you're willing to travel to your nearest swing district, groups like Swing Left can help you get there, get trained, and get talking with voters. In the SF Bay Area, for instance, dozens of local groups are working together to canvass swing districts in the nearby Central Valley. Check out bayareacoalition.org!

This is excellent! For too much of the time, Kos has let the community lead GOTV and other involvement efforts. To put this on the front page and get the organisation behind it will make a positive difference. Bookmarking and passing along.

A massive vote at the November midterms is crucial. But 66 million eligible Americans are NOT registered to vote. And 63% of these say they have never been asked to register by anyone! In the United States, 174 million people are registered to vote, but only about 40% bother to vote in midterm elections. And we wonder why so many of our elected officials are bozos. This coming election provides a real chance to rein in Don TOFU and his band of crooks. A presidential election-level turnout [sadly about 62%] would seal the deal.

Some states have done same day registration 😔 n election day. It really makes it easier for busy people, spacey peeps, and confused humans.

Also, cozy & welcoming, to add in a cluster of sweet pet cats, and voting becomes a lot easier... Just kidding about the kittens ,& cats ...

Same day registration works well, as a solution that makes it easier to vote. You can register when you go to vote. Some states do this, and it's worked well...

We should change election days from Tuesdays to Saturdays and Sundays

GOTV (get out the vote) is a grand idea. Worked with this many times in the past.

The problem with GOTV is motivation, not coercion.

Finding our society gets used to their creature comforts, like an expectation of clean water that does not pass on nasty little things like; Cholera, Typhoid, Dysentery, and other nasty bugs that plague the rest of the world. Safer Cars, nicer Phones, paved streets, fast food, and the numerous things that make life more pleasurable. There comes a lack of motivation to exercise the Franchise (a common term that used to be taught in grade school).

People no longer respect the Franchise granted them by the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

    Until threatened.

Our Franchise is now under attack, by those who desire to be the new Dictators. They speak well, cloaking their goals under the False Flags of Patriot, Exceptionalism, and Loyalty.

Their Real goal is to destroy the Franchise. The Truth: We do not recognize it.

This Election is about Survival of the Franchise. Franchise = Your Right to Vote.

One side is making it harder, trying to LIMIT the Franchise to Loyalists and Devotees.

The other side is working hard to have ALL citizens Use the Franchise to express their inherited opinion in elections.

    Which is important to you?

    (A) Using your franchise to support Dictators (and Losing it in the long run)?

    (B) Using your Franchise to fight for your Rights?

    This Election: You decide.

IMHO this message will motivate much more than simple GOTV? This round it is a survivor thing.

How about adding to the GOTV hub links to group with demonstrated effectiveness in GOTV. Especially the ones that don't work only in election years.

  8. Comment by ericfreedom.

Getting out the vote is critical. I always rec diaries documenting this or that groups efforts, successes, and challenges doing the work to get out the vote, and also to providing information so people can be sure the money they donate will go to the kind of candidate they want to support.

I chose to donate all the money I had budgeted for this years election late last year, but then when asked, I donated to the organization again this year.

That is what I could do.

Please do whatever you can do. Money was what I could do this election. In past elections I went door to do, phone banked, and sent postcards.
