Congressional deadline to end US-Iran war approaches with no end in sight

Analysts and congressional aides have said they expect President Donald Trump to do one of two things when faced with tomorrow’s deadline to end the Iran war or make a case to Congress to extend it.

They say the president will either disregard the date, arguing that the ceasefire marked the end of the conflict, or notify Congress of his plans for a 30-day extension.

The war began on February 28 with US and Israeli air strikes on Iran, and Trump notified Congress of the action 48 hours later, setting the 60-day clock that ends tomorrow.

A true end to the conflict, however, appears unlikely anytime soon.

Israeli commander says troops are 10km deep into Lebanon, ‘no intention to pull back’

Rafi Milo, commander of Israel’s Northern Command, has said Israeli forces have pushed 10km (6.2 miles) into Lebanese territory and “do not intend to pull back.”

Speaking with local officials in northern Israel, Milo said Israeli forces in southern Lebanon are “clearing” a vast area that spans 60 Lebanese villages.

“We do not intend to pull back from the line. What we’re doing is significant, and we still have much to do,” he said in comments published by Israel’s military.

“We are aware of the public mood on the home front — this is a long war,” Milo continued, adding that the military is prepared to “continue as long as needed” to dismantle Hezbollah.

Italy condemns ‘unlawful’ Israeli interception of aid ships heading for Gaza

Italy has condemned Israel’s interception of aid ships bound for Gaza and demanded the release of its citizens, as tensions grow over the seizure of civilian vessels in international waters.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office said Rome wants all Italians freed after they were “unlawfully detained” today during the operation near Crete.

Organisers from the Global Sumud Flotilla described the interception as piracy, saying the boats were carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Germany and Italy also issued a joint statement expressing “deep concern”, urging “full respect of international law” and warning against “irresponsible actions”.

Italy, one of Israel’s closest allies in Europe, has recently criticised its attacks on Lebanon and paused a defence cooperation deal.

Israel described flotilla participants as “attention-seeking agitators”.

Hezbollah deploys fibre-optic drones to evade Israeli air defences

Hezbollah has introduced a new battlefield tactic against Israeli forces: deploying fibre-optic-guided drones that bypass electronic defences, marking a shift in the evolving conflict along the Lebanon border.

The small devices, connected to operators by ultra-thin cables, cannot be jammed like conventional drones. Their use mirrors tactics seen in Ukraine, where similar systems have proved difficult to counter.

Experts said the drones can fly low and approach targets undetected, posing a serious threat despite their size.

“If you know what you’re doing, it’s absolutely deadly,” Robert Tollast of the Royal United Services Institute told The Associated Press.

Hezbollah has reportedly used the drones against Israeli troops in southern Lebanon and near the border, where traditional rockets and larger drones have been intercepted.

Ex-US general warns further strikes on Iran unlikely to force Tehran to negotiate

Retired US General Mark Kimmitt has said it is routine for US presidents to receive military options briefings, following reports that President Donald Trump has been presented with potential strike scenarios against Iran.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Kimmitt said such plans often focus on limited, rapid operations described as short, sharp shocks. However, he questioned whether that approach would succeed given Iran’s track record of resisting sustained pressure.

“For 46 years, Iran has shown its resilience, for better or worse, whether it’s been in their ability to withstand sanctions, economic decline, or a significant military operation. I think that if we expect a short series of attacks on Iran to compel them back to the negotiating table on our terms, I think we have to rethink that,” said Kimmitt.

Kimmitt also warned that shutting down the Strait of Hormuz cannot be sustained without wider consequences, as disruptions ripple through global markets.

“This is starting to have economic impact [that goes] well beyond Iran and the United States, particularly in the absence of agricultural products coming out of the strait during the middle of planting season,” said Kimmitt.

US Defense Secretary Hegseth faces ‘pointed questions’ from Senate Democrats about Iran war

    By Patty Culhane

    Reporting from Washington, DC

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is very much offering a fiery rebuke to Democrats as he appears before a Senate hearing.

The Republicans are largely supportive of the president, the defence secretary and the war in Iran, while Democrats are questioning the why, the how and when this will end.

Senator Jack Reed had some very pointed questions for Hegseth. He made a little bit of news, saying that, according to unclassified numbers, Iran still has 40 percent of its drone capacity and 60 percent of its ballistic missile capacity. Hegseth said we can’t get into that and that it would be discussed in a classified setting. Then he went on to say that the US believes it has decimated Iran’s military industrial base so that it won’t be able to carry out large-scale production of either missiles or drones.

Nevertheless, that would be a very telling statistic if it is borne out. We’ve heard from the beginning of the war from the Trump administration that one of the goals is to destroy Iran’s missile programme and armed forces. So it’s going to be hard for the US to claim victory if so much of the Iranian stockpile is still intact.

Trump tells Germany’s Merz to stop interfering on Iran

The US president has issued a strong rebuke to the German chancellor, urging Merz to stop “interfering” on Iran and to focus instead on ending the war in Ukraine.

Trump’s criticism was the second this week of Merz and came a day after he said he might redeploy thousands of US soldiers stationed in Germany.

“The Chancellor of Germany should spend more time on ending the war with Russia/Ukraine (Where he has been totally ineffective!), and fixing his broken Country, especially Immigration and Energy,” Trump posted on social media.

Merz should spend “less time on interfering with those that are getting rid of the Iran Nuclear threat, thereby making the World, including Germany, a safer place!” Trump added.

The president’s frustration with Merz seems to have been sparked by the German leader’s comments on Monday when he said Tehran was “humiliating” Washington in negotiations to end the war in Iran.

Growing concern in Israel about potential ‘Lebanese quagmire’

    By Nour Odeh

Reporting from Ramallah, occupied West Bank

In Israel, there was opposition to this ceasefire, which was unilaterally announced by the US president and then also extended by the US president. This was seen by ordinary Israelis, especially residents of the north, who bore the brunt of the confrontation with Hezbollah, as a betrayal.

Remember, the Israeli government had promised Israelis that it had already defeated Hezbollah, that this war front was being opened to dismantle the armed group and then they found out that Hezbollah had recovered.

In addition to not having any appetite for compromise, commentary in Israeli media is focusing on the difficulties the Israeli army is facing in making decisions and in getting bogged down in a Lebanese quagmire.

Israel to send detained Gaza flotilla activists to Greece

The activists were detained overnight near Crete while attempting to sail as part of a Gaza flotilla.

UN warns war-driven price surge pushing Somalia towards famine

Tom Fletcher, the UN undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs, has warned during a visit to Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, that the US-Israel war on Iran is already hitting the country hard.

“I’ve been in Somalia for almost a week now, and I’m hearing every day, every hour, the impact of this crisis,” Fletcher told Al Jazeera.

“Remember that Somalia was already facing enormous needs … and now with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, you have a doubling of food prices, a doubling of fuel prices,” Fletcher added.

“The result, I’m afraid, is that the danger of famine is looming once again in this region. You’ve got half a million kids in severe acute malnutrition. You got a doubling in hunger past six months. So, we need the world to wake up to the crisis here.”

Asia weathers Strait of Hormuz shock unevenly as fuel strains hit region

Parts of Asia have absorbed the fallout from disruption in the Strait of Hormuz far better than expected, while others are already feeling the strain, according to Alicia Garcia Herrero, chief economist for Asia Pacific at Natixis.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Herrero said the closure of the key shipping route would normally trigger severe shortages across the region, but the impact has proved uneven, with Southeast Asia emerging as the most vulnerable.

“When you actually spend time in Taiwan, South Korea or Japan, let alone China, you really don’t see much of that impact,” she added.

Herrero said the disparity stems from more than just crude oil supply, pointing instead to refined products such as jet fuel, diesel and sulphur used in food production and fertilisers.

“China, in particular, but also South Korea and Japan, they have a lot of refined capacity. So in a way, they can wait and see without cutting on demand.”

By contrast, she said much of Southeast Asia lacks refining capacity and depends heavily on external supply. “They depend on the rest of Asia or on the Gulf for that, they are really screaming for support.”

UK terror watchdog calls for a ban on pro-Palestine marches

The head of the UK’s terrorism watchdog, Jonathan Hall, has called for a “moratorium” on pro-Palestine marches, linking recent anti-Semitic attacks in London to protests against Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza without evidence, in comments to Times Radio.

His remarks come after a stabbing in north London’s Golders Green area where two Jewish people were injured by a suspect described as having “serious violence and mental health issues”.

The intervention has intensified debate over how authorities respond to public protest amid Israel’s war on Gaza, condemned as a genocide.

Hall also told the BBC that attacks targeting Jewish communities now represent “the biggest national security emergency” since 2017.

The Metropolitan Police has designated Whitehall, Parliament Square and Trafalgar Square for a far-right demonstration led by Tommy Robinson on May 16, while refusing the Palestine Coalition its requested route for a Nakba commemoration planned for the same day.

$25bn or $1 trillion: How much has Iran war really cost the US?

US Defense Secretary Hegseth has clashed with American lawmakers over the cost of war on Iran in his first appearance on Capitol Hill since the conflict broke out.

The Pentagon told a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday that the US had spent $25bn on its war on Iran, largely on munitions and equipment maintenance.

But Democratic leaders and several economists believe that number to be a significant underestimate. They say the actual cost to the US economy and the country’s 330 million people could amount to between $630bn and $1 trillion.

Trump to receive briefing on military options; nuclear issue and Strait of Hormuz in focus

    By Alan Fisher

    Reporting from the White House

We know that Trump has a briefing today and it’s being reported that he’ll be given military options for what happens next.

This isn’t unusual: the military constantly reviews and renews its plans.

One thing being discussed is the possibility of new strikes on Iran to force them to talk about the nuclear issue. These could be short, concentrated and very targeted. They also have to talk about how they deal with the issue of the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump made it very clear when speaking at the White House on Wednesday that he sees the blockade as something putting extreme pressure on Iran. He has effectively dismissed the idea of further discussions without talking about the nuclear issue.

The blockade is definitely affecting Iranian ports. For the past few days and weeks, we know there’s a strong message here coming from different leadership levels, consolidating control of the Strait of Hormuz.

Aoun told a delegation from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies that Israel is continuing to violate the ceasefire in southern Lebanon, demolishing homes and places of worship, with an increasing number of people killed and wounded.

“The work done by volunteers to rescue the wounded represents the ultimate sacrifice and selflessness in the service of the humanitarian mission they believe in, even to the point of martyrdom, despite the fact that the rescue missions they undertake are reported in advance to ensure their protection.”

World facing ‘major economic and energy challenge’ due to war, says IEA chief

The head of the International Energy Agency has reiterated that the world is facing its biggest energy crisis in history due to the war.

“The oil markets and gas markets are going through big difficulties. When I looked last time, the oil price was over $120 which is putting a lot of pressure on many countries,” said Fatih Birol at a conference in Paris.

“Our world is facing a major economic and energy challenge.”

Italy condemns flotilla interception by Israel, seeks ‘immediate’ release of citizens

Italy has slammed Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla while in international waters.

Italy “condemns the seizure of the Global Sumud Flotilla vessels… and calls on Israel to immediately release all the unlawfully detained Italians”, the government said in a statement reported by the AFP news agency.

Italy’s ANSA news agency cited sources among the organisers saying 24 Italians had been detained.

The government called for the “full respect of international law and guarantees on the physical safety of the people on board”.
