The Conversation is a weekly dive into the most popular stories on Daily Kos and what it tells us about the national political environment.

How much time do we have left before January 2029?

Fate has played a cruel joke on us, and the world is paying the price. Yes, the polls show President Donald Trump in the gutter, clinging to barely a third of (deplorable) Americans. But that doesn’t make this easier. If anything, it makes the whole thing more surreal and exhausting.

So how do we survive this clown show?

For Trump’s lackeys, alcohol apparently helps, as we see in the first two headlines below. Trump himself doesn’t drink, but he didn’t need to be drunk to get sidelined from critical planning to rescue two airmen trapped in hostile Iranian territory after their plane was shot down.

Trump’s incompetence, irrationality, impulsiveness, and stupidity were enough to get him frozen out of his own Situation Room. He was probably off obsessing over his stupid ballroom, anyway.

Alcohol is a bipartisan pastime, and maybe especially useful for liberals trying to survive this hellscape, but there’s a stronger drug: Democrats fighting for the cause.

There’s a reason these stories resonate.

Democrats don’t have the levers of power. They don’t have the media, legacy or social. But that doesn’t excuse how soft they were coming out of the gate when Trump retook power. They spent the entire 2024 campaign warning that he was a wannabe dictator—warnings that proved accurate—and then they governed like it was business as usual.

That disconnect still lingers. Even now, with Republicans staring down a potential midterm wipeout, Democrats remain deeply unpopular.

We are going to win in November because Trump and his party are dangerous and everyone hates them, not because Democrats have convinced anyone they’re better.

That’s fine for now. It won’t be fine in 2028. Which is why stories of Democrats fighting back break through. People are hungry for it. They want to see it. They reward it.

More of that, please.

But we also like stories of Republicans facing electoral consequences, don’t we?

Democrats just picked up four instant House seats after Virginia narrowly passed a referendum to redraw its congressional map.

Meanwhile, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is refusing to schedule a special election to replace Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales, who resigned in disgrace. That’s not normal. Republicans have a razor-thin majority. They need every vote. Trump won that district by 15 points. It should be an easy hold. The fact that they’re stalling tells you exactly how confident they are.

And then there’s this:

Democrats ran away screaming from former President Barack Obama because he wore a tan suit or something. Maybe it was because he liked dijon mustard, so outrageous.

Republicans can’t quit a guy that 1 in 5 of their own voters think should be impeached.

It’s a crazy world.
