Welcome to the new halfhour edition of Gay USA. I'm Andy Hum. I'm Anne Northrup. Hi Andy. Hello An.0:37
37 seconds
Uh,
one quick note for those of you in Philadelphia who did not see us last
week because the station had a power outage. Go to gayusatv.org0:46
46 seconds
where
you can find last week's show. You can always do that. And we're going
to launch into the news. But the kinds of things, of course,0:52
52 seconds
we're
going to talk about the tremendous Trump outrages this week. They
continue to pile up. But there's also good news from, you know, states
all over the country and some setbacks.1:03
1 minute, 3 seconds
And we have some entertainment recommendations for you, too, as we often do. And a couple of giants to mourn.1:10
1 minute, 10 seconds
Yes. And bad news from the Pope, but we'll talk about that later.1:14
1 minute, 14 seconds
Okay. All right. Uh let's start with Washington and the hideous Trump administration as usual. And what are1:21
1 minute, 21 seconds
they doing now? They have decided to cancel all agreements that any previous administration made with uh what1:30
1 minute, 30 seconds
colleges and schools and and and schools about treating transgender people with dignity. Those are all off.1:38
1 minute, 38 seconds
They
have terminated half a dozen civil rights settlements about the rights
of trans students. Uh they want to force students to identify as the
birth sex.1:49
1 minute, 49 seconds
They've got 40 investigations going into schools that protect trans uh1:56
1 minute, 56 seconds
particularly concentrating of course on sports and bathrooms.2:00
2 minutes
But what needs to be said is this kind of termination of these agreements is without precedent.2:07
2 minutes, 7 seconds
Totally. Well, everything they do is without precedent. Well, uh, now, of course, you know, when Trump was trying2:14
2 minutes, 14 seconds
to
sell the war unsuccessfully this past week, um, he said, you know, one
of the reasons were attacking them is they they throw gay people off the
tops of2:22
2 minutes, 22 seconds
buildings. I mean, he throws this stuff in as if he cares while at home all he's doing is persecuting us.2:29
2 minutes, 29 seconds
And, uh, going back to Minneapolis uh,2:33
2 minutes, 33 seconds
because
something new has arisen. Uh when Alex Prey and Renee Good were killed
in the streets by ICE uh official, ICE workers, uh Christy Gnome,2:45
2 minutes, 45 seconds
then
the head of the Department of Homeland Security, said they the first
thing she said was they were domestic terrorists. And I thought,
domestic2:53
2 minutes, 53 seconds
terrorists? That's crazy. What are you talking about? And I never got a good feeling about what that meant because2:59
2 minutes, 59 seconds
[clears throat]2:59
2 minutes, 59 seconds
and
of course it's what they said about everybody trying to get into the
country uh who were being excluded or picked up and and isolated. They
were foreign terrorists.3:07
3 minutes, 7 seconds
Well, now we have an answer because the f it turns out the FBI has a whole new program going. Uh the political3:16
3 minutes, 16 seconds
pre-crime center. It sounds like that Tom Cruz movie about precognition. 10 federal agencies involved.3:23
3 minutes, 23 seconds
Yes. So, here's what they've done.3:26
3 minutes, 26 seconds
They've said they're going after all domestic terrorists. And they have defined what a domestic terrorist is.3:32
3 minutes, 32 seconds
And I think it's worth hearing this list. You are a domestic terrorist. If you are seen as anti-American,3:41
3 minutes, 41 seconds
anti- capitalist, anti-Christian, uh you want to overthrow the government,3:47
3 minutes, 47 seconds
you are an extremist on migration, you are an extremist on race or gender, and3:54
3 minutes, 54 seconds
you show hostility to traditional American views on family, religion, and4:01
4 minutes, 1 second
morality. If only extremism on race and religion meant racists and misogynist, it means the opposite.4:08
4 minutes, 8 seconds
Exactly. It means you want DEI. So on that list, which includes about 90% of the American people, if not more, uh4:17
4 minutes, 17 seconds
this is their way to define who is a domestic terrorist. Not who's going around with an armload of weapons going4:24
4 minutes, 24 seconds
after people. It is this list of you don't agree with us and we're going after you and defining you as an domestic.4:34
4 minutes, 34 seconds
All the camps that they're building right now for uh people on immigration issues uh can be used for us. Absolutely. Yes.4:42
4 minutes, 42 seconds
Uh and that's that's how they define Renee Good and Alex Prey as domestic terrorists.4:49
4 minutes, 49 seconds
Now, of course, Trump's come out with his budget. Now, presidential budgets,4:52
4 minutes, 52 seconds
you
know, we don't want to take them too seriously because they have to go
through Congress. But he he calls for that vicious vicious Congress
which is standing up to him and fighting back.5:02
5 minutes, 2 seconds
They
do want a few of these issues, but he wants two billion cuts. Two
billion in cuts to HIV specific services, elimination of trans health
programs,5:11
5 minutes, 11 seconds
defunding of fair housing protections.5:13
5 minutes, 13 seconds
It would eliminate hopa, the the the longstanding housing opportunities,5:18
5 minutes, 18 seconds
right, etc. Uh he wants to kill all funding for uh trans care, kills all funding for anything they define as DEI.5:29
5 minutes, 29 seconds
And you just saw this list of domestic.5:32
5 minutes, 32 seconds
I
was discouraged to see even the mayor of New York in in releasing his
report on race in New York City cut all the words, all the DEI words.5:41
5 minutes, 41 seconds
It's
a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. I I'm glad I don't
have to be in that situation. Well, the DOJ is still after him on it,5:48
5 minutes, 48 seconds
of course. Uh, and the Trump administration wants to cut $73 billion5:56
5 minutes, 56 seconds
from
social programs across the board to pay for their billion dollar a day
nonsense attack on Iran. And that's going to mean everybody, Medicare,6:08
6 minutes, 8 seconds
Medicaid, uh,6:09
6 minutes, 9 seconds
well, the Medicare and Medicaid cuts from the big beautiful bill haven't even kicked in yet.6:14
6 minutes, 14 seconds
Yes. because they scheduled those for after the midterms,6:18
6 minutes, 18 seconds
but this is going to be even more. This is going to escalate it. They are basic. They are shamelessly, shamelessly,6:26
6 minutes, 26 seconds
relentlessly cutting anything that helps people in this country because they don't care about people that we know.6:34
6 minutes, 34 seconds
They don't care about the Iranians. They don't care about people in the US either because we're all domestic terrorists.6:40
6 minutes, 40 seconds
Well, you know, and one of them seems to be this gay journalist, Eugene Ramirez, who was detained at the Kennedy Center.6:48
6 minutes, 48 seconds
Trump showed up for a for a performance of Chicago. So, he's in the audience.6:53
6 minutes, 53 seconds
And before the performance, he starts booing and uh he gets detained for that.6:58
6 minutes, 58 seconds
He
was eventually allowed back into his seat to see the security came and
grabbed him from where he was, took him to the side, hid7:05
7 minutes, 5 seconds
him,
and then when the theater finally went dark and the show started, they
took him back. You said they hit him? No, no, no, they hid.7:12
7 minutes, 12 seconds
Oh, hid him and uh and then took him back to his seat uh when the show started.7:19
7 minutes, 19 seconds
All right. Uh but there's there is encouraging news. 23 state attorney generals uh have filed uh opposition to7:26
7 minutes, 26 seconds
the the the thing that requires uh getting rid of all these DEI requirements. And so, you know, they're they're fighting.7:35
7 minutes, 35 seconds
Yeah. But the administration has just issued another executive order uh barring DEI discrimination by federal contractors.7:45
7 minutes, 45 seconds
Right.7:46
7 minutes, 46 seconds
So,
we're not going to hold it just to uh discreet audiences. We're going
to expand it to anyone who's doing business with the federal government.7:53
7 minutes, 53 seconds
So, we have a correction. Speaking of de of of activists, um we showed you some fellow old older people staging a no8:02
8 minutes, 2 seconds
kings demonstration and we said it was Brookdale uh assisted living and no,8:07
8 minutes, 7 seconds
it's an independent senior facility in Battery Park City that was formerly operated by Brookdale. They had all they8:14
8 minutes, 14 seconds
had 40 people down there in the no kings and they uh the Thank you, Robert, for the correction.8:20
8 minutes, 20 seconds
Well, and he pointed out it's not assisted living. It's independent living. That's what I said. Yes.8:25
8 minutes, 25 seconds
All right. All right. So, we go to some state news.8:28
8 minutes, 28 seconds
Uh I was going to do a little more justice department. I can't take it anymore.8:32
8 minutes, 32 seconds
Well,
Pam Bondi is out. Uh you know why anyone thought she was good in the
first place? She was horrible when she was the attorney general of
Florida. Course. Of course.8:40
8 minutes, 40 seconds
And she was horrible here.8:42
8 minutes, 42 seconds
Anti-gay. Yeah, but didn't do enough on retribution. Evidently, she just sold out all the Epstein victims. But here's8:51
8 minutes, 51 seconds
uh here's the next worry. Alo and Thomas may be pushed off the Supreme Court because they're the oldest members. Get8:59
8 minutes, 59 seconds
rid of them while he still has uh a majority in the Senate and can confirm new people before the midterms. Watch9:07
9 minutes, 7 seconds
out for that. It came up because Alo dehydrated, fainted at a dinner this week.9:13
9 minutes, 13 seconds
They can do it after the midterms if they want. They can do it up until, you know.9:16
9 minutes, 16 seconds
Yes. That's how we got uh who who was one of the one of the bad people.9:21
9 minutes, 21 seconds
One of the bad people, but that's on the agenda.9:25
9 minutes, 25 seconds
Okay. Uh and of course Hegathth uh got rid of uh the generals and the chaplain9:32
9 minutes, 32 seconds
uh who because they told him not to remove the women and black uh general nominees. Uh and it turns out he has a9:39
9 minutes, 39 seconds
whole history of uh uh vetoing uh female and black candidates in this past.9:47
9 minutes, 47 seconds
Well, that's because Jesus is in charge.9:49
9 minutes, 49 seconds
Uh that's how the uh uh he compared the rescue of the air to uh the resurrection of Jesus Christ.9:57
9 minutes, 57 seconds
Yep. All right. Happy Easter.9:58
9 minutes, 58 seconds
Now we can go to the So I got some good news from Georgia.10:01
10 minutes, 1 second
First of all, by the way, the special election for um Marjorie Taylor Green's seat. There was a of course the10:09
10 minutes, 9 seconds
Republican won, but it was a 25 point swing. 25 points. This has to make Republicans nervous. Well, Democrats are10:18
10 minutes, 18 seconds
celebrating because they say this is an indicator that the Democrats can win Georgia because if a a district that red10:26
10 minutes, 26 seconds
is sinking that fast in good news for John Oaf who's running for re-election to Senate, but Georgia10:32
10 minutes, 32 seconds
equality uh beat back all the anti-LGBTQ bills in the legislature. They they had 400 people who went to the capital to10:40
10 minutes, 40 seconds
fight for it and in spite of underhanded political maneuvers they succeeded.10:46
10 minutes, 46 seconds
Uh in Idaho in Boisee uh there was a protest in the governor's office a sit10:52
10 minutes, 52 seconds
in
because he signed such horrible uh anti-trans legislation which we told
you about last year. 40 people participated in the sitin. Nine were
arrested.11:05
11 minutes, 5 seconds
I'm trying to give them the good news first. Okay. Maryland.11:07
11 minutes, 7 seconds
Oh,
I think it's good news when protesters show up. But the Well, we uh we
knew that last week. I'm thrilled that protesters sat in.11:16
11 minutes, 16 seconds
Uh in Maryland, uh a bill passed the House that says that any educational institution may not exclude an11:24
11 minutes, 24 seconds
individual from participation uh based on a whole variety of bases, including gender identity and sexual orientation.11:31
11 minutes, 31 seconds
So, they're being proactive there. And I don't know if you define this as positive, but I do. In Topeka, Kansas,11:39
11 minutes, 39 seconds
uh a trans activist, Samantha Boucher,11:43
11 minutes, 43 seconds
showed up and went into a uh women's restroom deliberately with the press11:50
11 minutes, 50 seconds
there and and the security and the governor was there to challenge the fact that the legislature has barred this.11:58
11 minutes, 58 seconds
She did get Governor Laura Kelly said, "I'm sorry,12:01
12 minutes, 1 second
this is happening to you." Y in Wisconsin, another good governor,12:06
12 minutes, 6 seconds
Tony Ivers on the transgender day of visibility, he vetoed five anti-LGBTQ12:13
12 minutes, 13 seconds
bills that were passed by the state legislaturator's Republican majority. Um,12:19
12 minutes, 19 seconds
and in Kentucky, uh, uh, Queer Kentucky has, uh, helped beat back an anti-trans bill that would have banned, uh,12:31
12 minutes, 31 seconds
teachers who are trans on the grounds that they had mental illness. And, uh,12:36
12 minutes, 36 seconds
and
Wisconsin is getting even bluer. I mean, you remember the huge fight
where Elon Musk spent hundred million dollars to try to knock off a
Supreme Court12:44
12 minutes, 44 seconds
justice. Republicans didn't even try this year. and the de the liberal Chris Taylor uh won a 20point victory for the12:52
12 minutes, 52 seconds
Supreme Court seat which really solidifies the liberal majority which is so important uh there in Wisconsin.12:58
12 minutes, 58 seconds
And if you want to follow what's going on in the states, the ACLU uh on their website is tracking 500 anti-LGBTQ13:07
13 minutes, 7 seconds
bills proposed in states across the country. Well, Ohio's House passed a bill banning drag outside of an adult13:16
13 minutes, 16 seconds
entertainment
venue. Uh lewd performances of course are already banned, but they love
to pile on with the uh with when they're anti-drag.13:24
13 minutes, 24 seconds
Well, here's another Ohio story. And a Christian author, very anti-LGBTQ, uh father of 10 kids.13:33
13 minutes, 33 seconds
Oh, yeah. has been indicted for rape,13:37
13 minutes, 37 seconds
sexual battery, uh, and other sexual assault on kids aged 10 to 13. 10 to 13.13:46
13 minutes, 46 seconds
It's always the ones who protest the mo most. There are a lot of them.13:49
13 minutes, 49 seconds
But
in Iowa, an appellet court ruled that the state can enforce a law that
restricts teachers from talking about LGBTQ topics in schools. Um, they
said,13:59
13 minutes, 59 seconds
"Oh,
those restrictions are not amorphous." and the books in the library can
be considered part of the school's curriculums. So therefore, they can
be banned.14:09
14 minutes, 9 seconds
Well, here are a couple of good news stories. In uh California, in San Francisco, they held a relay marathon.14:17
14 minutes, 17 seconds
You have a team of three and one does the swimming and one does the running and one does the biking.14:23
14 minutes, 23 seconds
And a transmasculine team took third place. Uh there they are. the14:31
14 minutes, 31 seconds
uh very uh victorious in third place uh trans mask team. These are trans men who14:39
14 minutes, 39 seconds
uh
did a great job there in San Francisco and they really have great
politics. I you know if you read about them and then in Miami14:48
14 minutes, 48 seconds
at some point we're going to have to stop doing all these weddings especially if uh WNBA stars but another one got14:55
14 minutes, 55 seconds
married to her girlfriend uh the Dallas Wings Enrique Ogan Bale has married15:03
15 minutes, 3 seconds
influencer Laala Ron. They're longtime girlfriends and they had a small but secret wedding.15:11
15 minutes, 11 seconds
Yes. But it's gotten out. Congratulations to them.15:16
15 minutes, 16 seconds
When you mentioned Pam Bondi, you forgot to mention her farewell attack. Her DOJ is suing Minnesota and the Minnesota15:23
15 minutes, 23 seconds
State High School League for allowing transgender girls and women to play on school sports.15:28
15 minutes, 28 seconds
Well, that's sort of a given these days across the country. But yes, you're right. DOJ's proud to protect girls. Of15:35
15 minutes, 35 seconds
course, Trump is only firing women so far. Uh, who's next? Melania. Well, [laughter]15:42
15 minutes, 42 seconds
if only and that's quoting Melania.15:46
15 minutes, 46 seconds
[laughter]15:47
15 minutes, 47 seconds
Uh,
all right. Should we talk about Mississippi, by the way, became the
latest state to pass a ban on trans drivers. You license licenses on
their,15:57
15 minutes, 57 seconds
you know, it's outrageous. Um, and and you know, in upstate New York, it's not all well. The Dominican Sisters of16:05
16 minutes, 5 seconds
Hawthorne
are suing because they don't want to treat trans people fairly in their
in their facilities. Oh, we love them, but we don't want to use their
pronouns. We don't want to respect them.16:14
16 minutes, 14 seconds
We treat lesbian and gay patients, but uh our religion is against uh I thought your religion was against lesbian and16:22
16 minutes, 22 seconds
gay people, too. You You're only going to reject the trans people, right? All right.16:27
16 minutes, 27 seconds
All right. So uh should we talk about David Gerston?16:30
16 minutes, 30 seconds
Yes.
I mean this was a one of the most beloved publicists in the theater and
he was a tremendous force in the theater in Broadway especially in off
Broadway.16:41
16 minutes, 41 seconds
Died at 67 of pancreatic cancer more than 30 years in the business. Um and uh I'm going to link in our email to16:51
16 minutes, 51 seconds
an obituary on David Gerston. By the way, with our shorter show format, we're going to be putting even more stories,17:00
17 minutes
videos, whatever in the show notes. So,17:03
17 minutes, 3 seconds
go to gayusatv.org to get on the list for our only one email a week uh with all sorts of chalk17:10
17 minutes, 10 seconds
full and we've always done this giving you more amplification on the stories. All right, international news. Yes. So, uh,17:18
17 minutes, 18 seconds
big hero of the week, Pope Leo, speaking out against Trump and his war, and it was all over the news, right? Then, uh,17:25
17 minutes, 25 seconds
great. That's great. Um, although I don't think he turned out the Swiss guards to fight, uh, the United States.17:31
17 minutes, 31 seconds
Anyway, but uh we learned that back on February 27th, he held he embraced the17:38
17 minutes, 38 seconds
anti-gay group Courage International that people who are gay join to help them never make love for the rest of17:47
17 minutes, 47 seconds
their lives. It is a sick, soulcrushing quote unquote ministry. And you know, he's the first pope to meet with them.17:55
17 minutes, 55 seconds
Well, the Pope said celibacy is good and you are never alone. uh because Christ walks with you.18:03
18 minutes, 3 seconds
Yeah. And of course again reliab reliable reporting on the curio with the people who work in the Vatican is that18:09
18 minutes, 9 seconds
80% of the priests are gay and of course about 50% of the Catholic priesthood.18:15
18 minutes, 15 seconds
Almost none of them out except a handful.18:17
18 minutes, 17 seconds
And
don't think they're and they're all having they're all making love.
They're all they bring their boyfriends to the to the conclave to elect
the next pope. I'm not making this up. That's what they do.18:27
18 minutes, 27 seconds
Wow. Yes. Exactly. It's uh it's disgraceful and hypocritical.18:32
18 minutes, 32 seconds
Absolutely. And uh and yet it goes on and it must be beneficial.18:36
18 minutes, 36 seconds
Meanwhile, on Holy Thursday, the cardinal in Colombia, the country once again spent a day washing the feet of18:43
18 minutes, 43 seconds
transgender sex workers among others in Bogota's red light district. And there is a report that the pope uh also met18:51
18 minutes, 51 seconds
with the author of the uh fundamental book on opus day which is a uh rightwing18:59
18 minutes, 59 seconds
right very rightwing all the uh I think the authors of project 2025 are all opus19:06
19 minutes, 6 seconds
day Leonard Leo who picks all the Supreme Court justices so he got an earful on that. Well, speaking of JD19:13
19 minutes, 13 seconds
Vans,
he campaigned with the anti-gay dictator of Hungary, Victor Orban, who
was up for election this Sunday. Uh, and Trump called into the rally
also. Yeah.19:26
19 minutes, 26 seconds
Uh, and it's, you know, he praised him as someone who stands up for the values of Western civilization.19:32
19 minutes, 32 seconds
Yeah. Well, he also said to Orban, "Now,19:35
19 minutes, 35 seconds
don't you let those mean European countries withhold your money that belongs to you and tell you what to do."19:42
19 minutes, 42 seconds
Meanwhile, this the administration has been yelling at uh uh Obama for19:50
19 minutes, 50 seconds
returning Iran's money to them, which it was their money that we were holding.19:56
19 minutes, 56 seconds
And and and yet that is uh bad. It is all whose oxes gourd. In Romania, a20:03
20 minutes, 3 seconds
court ruled that the country must recognize a transman as a man after yearsl long battle. His name is Arian M.20:12
20 minutes, 12 seconds
Look at him. He's so cute.20:13
20 minutes, 13 seconds
[clears throat] He uh he's a he's a um a big biologist. I think his biology tutor and writer, but I mean he has won this20:21
20 minutes, 21 seconds
right for the entire European Union. So kudos to him [clears throat]20:25
20 minutes, 25 seconds
and kudos to the administrative court in Egypt which says uh trans people have a constitutional right to gender affirming20:33
20 minutes, 33 seconds
healthcare. Amazing health Egypt yes no you want you want to lift from Australia20:41
20 minutes, 41 seconds
a
group of trans non-binary and allied activists in Australia they made
what is the biggest trans pride flag ever and they unfurled it in a
park. There it is.20:52
20 minutes, 52 seconds
130x 65 uh ft in Brisbane uh suburb of West End to honor trans visibility day.21:00
21 minutes
Uh however, in Uganda uh the new anti-LGBTQ law has created a system of uh21:09
21 minutes, 9 seconds
entrapment, blackmail, and abuse of uh gay men particularly. So So the Olympics, we told you how21:17
21 minutes, 17 seconds
anti-trans they've become. Well, they're also anti-ex even though they give out millions of condoms at the Olympics21:24
21 minutes, 24 seconds
every year, but they just um u well so we told you about the fact that they banned this guy Kurt Adams Rosenstalls21:31
21 minutes, 31 seconds
who
did only fans and was making a lot of money doing it because he needed
it because they don't make any money. So now his brother Claus Francis21:40
21 minutes, 40 seconds
Rosenstalls, he's left team Great Britain to compete for Latafia rather than incur the wrath of team Great21:49
21 minutes, 49 seconds
Britain
over having an adult subscription. Yes, Latafia will let him do it.
That's interesting. Yeah. Interesting case from London, too.21:57
21 minutes, 57 seconds
The Metropolitan Police have been found to botch uh the case of Edward uh Cornis, who uh was killed at 19. So, he22:07
22 minutes, 7 seconds
shows up, he's dropped off for school in London. He uh two days later, he's dead.22:12
22 minutes, 12 seconds
Uh
he obviously got connected to these two older guys. He's in their hotel
room. They drugged him, it seems. And but when the police came, they
said,22:21
22 minutes, 21 seconds
"Oh, he just he's a he's a drug dealer. He's a drug dealer." Blah, blah, blah.22:25
22 minutes, 25 seconds
And
the parents were relentless in going, "So, now there's going to be an
investigation." I'm going to link to this story because it's totally
heartbreaking.22:32
22 minutes, 32 seconds
It's really uh Yes. And fascinating. Oh,22:35
22 minutes, 35 seconds
